TMT STEEL

TMT is "thermo mechanically

treated steel"

The name is derived from the metallurgical process

called thermo-mechanical treatment that integrates
work hardening and heat treatment into single
process.
ADVANTAGE OF THIS PROCESS IS THAT BARS DO NOT
NEED COLD TWISTING AND HENCE THESE BARS
SHOW EXCELLENT RESISTANCE TO CORROSION.
APPLICATIONS
General purpose concrete re-enforcement
structures
Bridges
Flyovers
Dams
High rise buildings
Industrial structures
Concrete roads
COMPOSITION
CARBON-0.3%
SULPHUR-0.05%
MANGANESE-0.5-1.2%
PHOSPHORUS-0.05%
MECHANICAL
PROPERTIES

TENSILE STRENGTH-630N/mm2
YIELD STRENGTH-520N/mm2
ELONGATION-22%
NEED OF TMT
BARS
TMT bars are used as reinforcement in the
concrete.
Concrete shows good compressive strength
but poor tensile strength which demands for
reinforcement.
Desired properties of reinforcement are:
1.High strength
2.High tensile strain
3.Good bond to the concrete
4.Thermal compatibility
5.Durability in the concrete environment
Manufacturing
process
Manufacturing process of TMT bars can be better
described as Hot Rolling where heated iron billets
continuously pass through the rollers of decreasing
diameter .
TMT process
After coming out of the last rolling mill bars
are water cooled in a microcontroller
controlled quenching chamber where
temperature gradient is produced in from core
to surface.
After the intensive cooling, the bar isexposed
to airand the core re-heats the quenched
surface layer by conduction,
thereforetemperingthe external martensite.
When the bars are taken out of the cooling
system, the heat flows from the core to the
outer surface,further temperingof the bars,
which helps them attain a higher yield
Properties

Due to such unique composition TMT bars show

excellent tensile strength, bendability, ductility.
Good corrosion resistance and excellent
bonding strength with concrete.
Alloying elements
Sulphur
Phosphorus
Manganese
Carbon
Where do we stand?
Future
India is expected to increase its per
capita steel consumption to 100kg
But barrier in doing so is India is net
importer of coak but has enormous
amount of iron oars.
Being a developing economy both
India and china will continue to
demand more and more steel for
infrastructure and civil engineering
