LESSON INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of the lesson, students are expected to:
Know how to install the DHCP.

Know how to configure the DHCP.

VTC 2012
OVERVIEW
DHCP enables you to dynamically assign an IP address, subn
et mask, default gateway, DNS server address, and WINS ser
ver address to a DHCP client, which can be any computer or
device on the network that is configured to acquire its IP ad

dress (and other TCP/IP settings) dynamically.
IP addresses are taken from a pool of addresses and are assi
gned to computer either permanently or for a fixed lease ti
me.
To add the DHCP role to a server running Windows Server 20
08, use the Add Roles Wizard, which can be started via the S
erver Manager.
Before installing DHCP on a server, you must configure the c
omputer with a static IP address.

Then, network connections of the server that have been
configured with a static IP address are detected. Select
the connection(s) that the DHCP server is to use for ser
vicing clients.

Then, you need to specify the parent domain (that the c
lients will use for name resolution) and the preferred D
NS server IPv4 address. If the server is also configured
with AD DS and DNS, this information is entered autom
atically.

By default, WINS server is not required for applications
on the network, and so is not integrated with the DHCP
settings transmitted to DHCP clients.

DHCP scope provides the range of IP addresses that th
e server can hand out to DHCP clients.

Protocol

IP address scope may also include an exclusion range, f
or computers that require static IP addresses.
Click the Add button to add a new IP scope.

VTC 2012
INSTALL DHCP
By default, DHCPv6 mode for your network is stateless,
which enables IPv6 clients to configure their own IPv6 a
ddresses without using the DHCP server.

INSTALL DHCP
All DHCP servers in your Windows Server 2008 domain m
ust be authorized with the Active Directory to be valid DH

You can use the current credentials (if you are logged on
with an account that has domain rights) or you can use su

CONFIGURE THE DHCP SERVER
DHCP is managed through the DHCP snap-in in the Server Manag
er by expanding the Roles and DHCP Server nodes.
The snap-in also monitors the DHCP service by showing events b
eing logged that are related to DHCP.
