Brahmagupta

Sanela Ahmetovic.
Famous Mathematician.
Who is this Brahmagupta?
Born in the city of Bhinmal , which is presently known as
North West Rajasthan

Born in 598, passed away in the mid to late 600s.

Known as the Father Of Zero.

Accredited to inventing the concept of zero. Brahmagupta

describes about Zero as one of the numerals which stood
for meaning nothing.

Not only was he a mathematician, he was the leader of

astronomical research in ancient India.
Brahmaguptas
theorem.
A debt minus zero is a debt.
A fortune minus zero is a fortune.
Zero minus zero is a zero.
A debt subtracted from zero is a fortune.
A fortune subtracted from zero is a debt.
The product of zero multiplied by a debt or
fortune is zero.
The product of zero multiplied by zero is zero.
The product or quotient of two fortunes is one
fortune.
The product or quotient of two debts is one
fortune.
The product or quotient of a debt and a fortune
is a debt.
The product or quotient of a fortune and a debt
What did that mean?
In his theorem he explains different uses of the concept of
zero. Which he uses debt and fortunes, what we recall
today negative and positive numbers.

For example a debt minus a zero is a debt, in other words a

negative number subtracted from a zero, the result will be a
negative.

The number zero, multiplied or divided by a negative or

positive number, will give you a zero as an result.
Who proved him
wrong?
Brahmaguptas concept of zero, was not all the
way complete.

How is that?

He stated that anything divided or multiplied by

zero will equal zero.

Not until five hundred years later, Bhaskara II

proved Brahmagupta wrong.

Bhaskara II said that anything divided by the

number zero will not equal to zero but infinity
instead.
Quadratic Equation.
Not only did Brahmagupta invent the concept of zero, he
also studied quadratic equations..

For instance, (x2+6x-8=0). This equation could have two

possible solutions, one as a negative number and the other
result as a positive number.
How Brahmagupta
theorem contributes
to mathematics
today.
In mathematics today, we use the concept of
the quadratic equation in our everyday math
lives. Classes such as Pre-Calculus, Algebra,
and high level calculus courses all use this
formula.

And as for the concept of zero. It helps us

define the absence of existence in our everyday
lives.
