means that the boys in this class
have serious discipline problems
and perform badly.

indicating a dull sound which could be
heard even inside the teachers office.
Streaming: originally meaning moving
together in the same direction like
flowing water.
Punishment is swift and painful: what
Mr. Martin means by punishment is
corporal punishment as will be told
later in the story. This remark reflects
Martins philosophy on education. He
believes that corporal punishment,
administered immediately and
inflicting pain on the trouble-maker is
effective in correcting a boys
misbehavior although it is painful.
