HYPERTENSION which is more common. Primary Hypertension It is also called as Idiopathic hypertension. The exact cause is unknown, but it is attributed to atherosclerosis. Risk factors of Hypertension There is no single cause for primary hypertension. Risk factors include: Family History Advancing age Race High salt intake Lifestyle factors: Obesity Excess alcohol consumption Intake of Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium Stress Use of contraceptive drugs Risk factors of Hypertension Family History people with a positive family history of HPN are twice at risk. Age Older people are at greater risk for HPN. High Salt Intake some people are more susceptible than others to effects of increased salt intake. Obesity risk is 2x greater among overweight / obese persons. Excessive alcohol intake 10% of HPN cases are related to alcohol consumption. Regular consumption of 3 or more drinks per day increased the risk of HPN. Prevention of Hypertension Proper Nutrition - reduce salt & fat intake Prevent becoming overweight / obese weight reduction through proper nutrition and exercise. Smoking Cessation tobacco use promotes atherosclerosis that may contribute to hypertension. People with risk factors should have regular check-ups and modification of risk factors.
