Embedded Systems
An embedded system is
a computer system with a
dedicated function within a
larger mechanical or electrical
system, often with real-time
computing constraints.
It is embedded as part of a
complete device often including
hardware and mechanical parts.
Embedded systems control Picture of the internals of
many devices in common use an ADSLmodem/router, a modern

embedded systems.[4] and flash memory (7).

It is one of the most widely used embedded operating

of a few tens or several hundred kilobytes,[2] or for
applications with real-time requirements.
TinyOS
is an embedded, component-based operating
system and platform for low-power wireless devices,
such as those used in wireless sensor
networks (WSNs), smartdust, ubiquitous
computing, personal area networks, building
automation, and smart meters.
TinyOS began as a collaboration between University of
California, Berkeley and Intel Research.

The IoT ( Internet of Things)
The Internet of Things is an expansive term that covers
any number of web-connected technologies.

Developers that deliver quality code, not just for safety-

and security-related applications, will have an edge in the
IoT space because over-the-air updates only help to address problems
after the fact. Though wireless connectivity significantly reduces corrections
in the field, the cost of bugs still grows exponentially as code moves from the
developer through testing to deployment.

Single board computers, in addition to microcontroller-based platforms,

are becoming viable IoT devices as their size and price continuously decrease.
In general, SBCs have more powerful processors than their microcontroller cousins,
which means they are capable of running more demanding applications and software
frameworks.
Processor Technology
Advances in processor technology will continue to
push IoT applications, though all embedded
applications will benefit from higher performance,
lower power requirements, and increased connectivity.
In particular, ARM and its partners have made a
significant investment in IoT solutions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
DNN and Deep Learning are just one aspect of artificial intelligence
(AI)

AI is moving quickly from research to production because it can

address such a wide range of applications, including object
identificationa critical aspect for applications like automotive
advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Storage
Storage is another key component to IoT and AI thats expected to
undergo significant change in 2017. DRAM and flash storage will
remain dominant

3D chip technology has become commonplace. Even high capacity and

performance is heading toward 3D DIMM DRAM. High bandwidth
memory (HBM) offers significantly more storage on-chip with a wider
bus than is possible with off-chip memory.
Virtual and Augmented Reality
Virtual-, augmented-, and merged-reality solutions will move from the
novelty stage to becoming useful tools in many areas.

Virtual reality (VR) is an artificial, computer-generated simulation or

recreation of a real life environment or situation. It immerses the user
by making them feel like they are experiencing the simulated reality
firsthand, primarily by stimulating their vision and hearing.

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that layers computer-

generated enhancements atop an existing reality in order to make it
more meaningful through the ability to interact with it.
