Workshop #5: Solid Conductor C Core with DC energized coil
A DC energized coil is wrapped
around a permeable C core. The
geometry of the core and coil are
available on a parasolids file and are
imported into Workbench. The
geometry is cut in half and the
resulting half symmetry model is
solved. The current distribution in
conductors modeled in this manner
is that of a DC energized solid
conductor (NOT uniform over the
cross section as with stranded
conductors and NOT subject to
redistribution due to the skin effect).
Although the current distribution is
that of a single turn solid conductor, Current distribution in coil
the number of turns specified for
such conductors may be greater
than one. Error introduced by
approximating stranded coils in this
manner is usually acceptable for

with a 225 mm cushion.
Ensure that the Merge
Parts? value is set to Yes.

We wish to create a half symmetry 1
model. In order to cut the imported
geometry, it must first be frozen.

Create a slice plane. Select the
global ZXPlane to be the base plane
of the slice.

Hold the Ctrl button down and
use the LMB to select the 3 parts
labeled Solid in the tree. The
RMB will produce the drop down
menu shown at right. Select
Suppress Body to eliminate
upper portions of the geometry 1: Ctrl + LMB
from further consideration.

Save the design modeler geometry
and click on the Project tab. Select
New Simulation. Choose Emag
Branch in the simulation wizard to
help guide you through the
simulation process.

Select Magnet in the tree and
import SA1010 steel material
properties to be associated with it. 4

Graphically select the core and
right click on Mesh in the tree to
assign an element size 0f 0.03 to
the core.

Insert another element size
specification, this time on the pole
face surfaces. Set the pole face size to
0.005 m. 3

Insert a conductor under
Environment in the tree.
Graphically pick the coil and click
apply in Details. Set the number 3
of turns to 386.

Insert a zero voltage boundary on
the conductor. Graphically pick
one of the cut surfaces of the coil 3
and click apply in Details.
Additionally, insert a 50 A current 4
to the other exposed face of the 1 (RMB)
coil on the symmetry plane (not
shown).

Insert a flux parallel boundary
condition on the spherical
exterior of the enclosure and on

the symmetry plane. Hold down
the Ctrl button as you use the
LMB to pick the surfaces. Click
Apply in Details when done.

Create a selection group by 3
graphically selecting the core and
selecting the Create Selections
Group button. Name the selection 1
magnet. This name will be referenced 4
in a command file that we will read in
next. The command file will produce a 5
contour plot of relative permeability as
a post processing operation.

Insert commands under Solutions in
the tree. RMB on Commands in the
tree and import the file mur.txt.
