BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLE

-also called substance turnover or

cycling substance
-is a pathway by which chemical
substance moves through biotic and
abiotic compartments of the earth.
Water Cycle
Carbon Cycle
Oxygen Cycle
Cycle
-it is a series of change which
comes back to the starting
point and which can be
repeated.
WATER CYCLE
-also known as hydrological cycle or
the H20 cycle.
-describes the continuous movement
of water on, above and below the
surface of the earth.
WATER CYCLE consist of:
Evaporation and Transpiration
Condensation
Precipitation
Run0ff
Drives the
water cycle
heats water,
-

oceans and seas.

EVAPORATION TRANSPIRATION

both cause
by the sun
-the transformation of water from liquid
to gas phases as it moves from the
ground or bodies of water into the
overlying atmosphere
Sun
heats up
water
-the release of
water vapor
from plants
and soil into
the air.
-the
transformation of
water vapor to
liquid water
droplets in the air,
creating clouds
and fog.
-condensed
water vapor
that falls to
the earth
surface.
-occurs as rain, snow, hail, fog drip,
graupel and sleet
-variety of ways
by which water
moves across
the land.
When rain falls into the land, some of the
water is absorbed into the ground forming
pockets of water called Groundwater.
Most ground eventually returns to the
ocean. Others run directly into the
streams of river. Waters collect in the
rivers, streams, and ocean is called runoff.
water never leaves
from the earth, it
repeat its cycle
again and again.
The Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Cycle
The carbon-Oxygen Cycle is interconnected
and involves three major processes and one
minor process:
1. Photosynthesis
2. Respiration
3. Combustion
4. Decomposition
Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and
water with the help of their roots. The
chlorophyll present in the leaves and the
energy from the sun, helps convert CO2 and
H20 into Oxygen (O2), sugar and water
vapor. Oxygen released by the plants as a
by-product into the atmosphere
Chemical formula for Photosynthesis
RESPIRATION occurs when animals and humans
take in oxygen from the air along with simple
sugars from the food.
This help in release of carbon dioxide, water
and energy from animal body. During cellular
respiration, animals and human requires oxygen
while inhalation. When they exhale the waste
product of Cellular Respiration, they release CO2
into the atmosphere again
PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION

How they are connected?

It is a process of burning that occurs naturally in the nature.
When combustion occurs CO2 is released into the
atmosphere.
Example:
Volcanic eruption
are natural
combustion
processes where
CO2 is released into
the atmosphere
due to burning.
Most pollution
problems
occur
because cars
and factories
release CO2
by their
burning fossil
fuels

CAR
FACTORY
-decomposition is when organic
matter breaks down chemically
into all simple elements that they
are made of and these elements
return back to the environment.
