FINDING THE MEDIAN
In finding the median, you must first determine
which is the median class

QUARTILES FOR GROUPED DATA
The formula for finding quartiles is:

= + [ 4
]

Where r = 1 for first quartile
= 2 for second quartile
= 3 for third quartile
= lower class boundary of the quartile class
= sum of the frequencies
cf = cumulative frequency of the quartile class
= frequency of the quartile class
c = class size
But first you must find the quartile class with the
formula :

4
Wherein:
r = 1 for the first quartile
= 2 for the second quartile
= 3 for the third quartile
= sum of the frequencies
FINDING THE FIRST QUARTILE
So now we will use the formula

1 =
4
(1)(52)
=
4
= 13
Now find the class in which 13 can fit in
Class Frequency Class Class Mark <Cf f(x)
Interval (f) Boundary( (x)
CB)

49-54 3 48.5-54.5 51.5 3 154.5

55-60 3 54.5-60.5 57.5 6 172.5

61-66 3 60.5-66.5 63.5 9 190.5

67-72 (1 ) 7 66.5-72.5 69.5 16 486.5

73-78 12 72.5-78.5 75.5 28 906

79-84 10 78.5-84.5 81.5 38 815

85-90 7 84.5-90.5 87.5 45 612.5

91-96 7 90.5-96.5 93.5 52 654.5

Then use the formula for finding the first quartile

= + [ 4
]

139
1 = 66.5 + [ ]6
7
4
= 66.5 + [ ]6
7
= 66.7 + 3.43
= 69.93
Same goes to the second quartile

2 =
4
(2)(52)
=
4
= 26
Now find the class in which 26 can fit in
Class Frequency Class Class Mark <Cf f(x)
Interval (f) Boundary( (x)
CB)

49-54 3 48.5-54.5 51.5 3 154.5

55-60 3 54.5-60.5 57.5 6 172.5

61-66 3 60.5-66.5 63.5 9 190.5

67-72 (1 ) 7 66.5-72.5 69.5 16 486.5

73-78(2 ) 12 72.5-78.5 75.5 28 906

79-84 10 78.5-84.5 81.5 38 815

85-90 7 84.5-90.5 87.5 45 612.5

91-96 7 90.5-96.5 93.5 52 654.5

Then use the formula for finding the second quartile

= + [ 4
]

2616
2 = 72.5 + [ ]6
12
10
= 72.5 + [ ]6
12
= 72.5 + 5
= 77.5

Notice that your second quartile has the same value

of the median class
Lastly for the third quartile:

3 =
4
(3)(52)
=
4
= 39
Now find the class in which 39 can fit in
Class Frequency Class Class Mark <Cf f(x)
Interval (f) Boundary( (x)
CB)

49-54 3 48.5-54.5 51.5 3 154.5

55-60 3 54.5-60.5 57.5 6 172.5

61-66 3 60.5-66.5 63.5 9 190.5

67-72 (1 ) 7 66.5-72.5 69.5 16 486.5

73-78(2 ) 12 72.5-78.5 75.5 28 906

79-84 10 78.5-84.5 81.5 38 815

85-90 (3 ) 7 84.5-90.5 87.5 45 612.5

91-96 7 90.5-96.5 93.5 52 654.5

Then use the formula for finding the third quartile

= + [ 4
]

3938
= 84.5 + [ ]6
7
1
= 84.5 + [ ]6
7
= 84.5 + 0.86
= 85.36
