Seven Philosophies of Education

1. Essentialism

To transmit the traditional moral values, intellectual and basic knowledge that students
need to become a model citizen
Essentialist frown upon vocational courses
Emphasis on the subject matter, the teacher are expected to be the foundation of
information
2. Progressivism

Teaches learners so they may live life fully NOW not to prepare for adult life
The curriculum responses to students needs and relates to students personal
lives and experiences.
CHANGE is the only thing that does not change. Progressivist are more concern
with teaching the learners to cope up with change.

3. Perrenialism

We are rational animals so school should therefore, develop the students


rational and moral values.
According to Aristotle; if we neglect students reasoning skills, we deprived them
of the ability to use their higher faculties to control their passions and appetite

Teachers do not allow the students interest to dictate what they teach

4. Existentialism

The teachers role is to help students define their own essence, they use values
clarification strategy. Teachers remain non-judgemental. education of the
whole person not just the mind.

5. Behaviorism

Concerned with the modification and shaping of students behavior by providing


for a favorable environment
Physical variables like light, temperature, arrangement of furnitures and visual
aids are controlled to get desired responses for learners
6. Linguistic Philosophy

To develop communication skills. Communication takes place in three ways; verbal,


non-verbal and paraverbal (refers to how we say what we say, the tone, pacing and
volume of our voices)

7. Constructivism

To develop intrinsically motivated and independent learners adequately equipped


with learning skills for them to be able to construct knowledge and make meaning
of them. Minds are not empty instead, minds are full of ideas waiting to be
midwife by the teacher. Allows the students to hypothesize, predict, manipulate
objects, research, investigate, image and invent design
