BUCKLING

Buckling is characterized by a sideways failure

of a structural member subjected to
high compressive stress.

LATERAL-TORSIONAL BUCKLING

When an applied load causes

both lateral displacement and twisting of a
member lateral-torsional buckling(LTB) has
occurred.
CASTELLATED BEAM

Standard fabrication method of castellated member starting from a plain-webbed parent section

Increase in depth leads to increase in the strong-axis bending

resistance
More suited for load cases loaded in strong-axis bending
Also provide access to service ducts through web opening

Presence of web opening leads to more complex behavior

New local failure modes will arise around the openings
FAILURE MODES
Formation of a Vierendeel mechanism
Lateral-torsional buckling
Rupture of a welded joint in a web
Formation of flexure mechanism Vierendeel mechanism
Buckling of web post

Proposed Design Approach for LTB of Castellated Members

Existing design expressions for LTB behavior do not consider the effect of
residual stress modification caused due to fabrication process
Proposed to use the design approach valid for Plain-Webbed members
without web opening, but with all cross-sectional properties calculated at
the castellation (2T approach)
EXPERIMENT

Three specimens were tested for the LTB to validate the numerical
model by comparing with experimental results
The geometry for these members was similar, but the length differed

Experimental Setup

The specimens were tested

in a symmetric four-point
bending test setup

LTB test setup

Load Displacement Curves
Parametric Study

Two types of analyses were done in the Parametric study

i. The elastic critical LTB moment
ii. LTB resistance
RESULT

It is observed that the analytic approach overestimates the critical bucking

load for the shorter members, making 2T approach unsafe
For the longer
lengths, an
underestimation
of Mcr is visible,
as the torsion
constant is
underestimated
in 2T approach
Contd..

A more correct value of torsion constant can be obtained by using a

weighted average approach for a beam with equivalent rectangular
opening of length l0,avg
l0,avg = w + 1.5c provide the best fit
