PT. Medan Sugar Industry (MSI) is a new company. Hence we bring forth
new attitude, new methods, new leadership, not to mention new
machines and new equipments as well.
We are a provider of high quality refined sugar for the food, beverage and
pharmaceutical industry.
We are a member of Samora Group, which has over 40 years of extensive
experience in the sugar industry.

Over 40 years of experience in sugar industry
PT. Medan Sugar Industry (MSI) was established in August 2013. Construction of the factory started in February 2012 on 7.8 ha of land in KIM 2, Medan,
Indonesia. The factory started trial operation in September 2013 under Sutech, a Thai Engineering Company.
Our machines and equipments are brand new. The main equipments and machineries came from Germany, Japan, France, Thailand, United States and
Indonesia.

Raw Sugar
Raw sugar delivered by ocean vessel is
transferred to lighter and brought to MSI
jetty.

A crane and excavator equipped with grab

bucket are used to unload raw sugar from
the lighters onto belt conveyors.

The conveyors transport the sugar to a

weigher for weighing before unloading the
sugar in the warehouse for storage

Raw Sugar has a color index > 1,500

ICUMSA (International Commission for
Uniform Method Sugar Analysis) it has
dark brown color, high dirt index and low
purity index
Affination & Carbonation
Affination
Raw sugar crystals are mixed with raw
syrup to soften and remove the crystal
outer coating of impurities.

Separate the crystal from the syrup and

hosed with hot water in a centrifuge

Carbonation
Milk of lime is added to the
melter and carbon dioxide is
bubbled to form chalk that
absorb coloured impurities.

Filtration & Ion Exchange Resin
Filtration
The carbonated precipitate together with the
impurities are removed by pressure filtering
through the first and second side filters
leaving behind clear liquor
Filtration station consists of the followings:
First stage: Rotary drum filters
Second stage: Sweetland filters
Polishing: Sweetland filters

Ion Exchange Resin

Further colour removal is achieved by pumping
the clear liquor through towers containing ion
exchange resins (IER).

The colour-causing components in the liquor

are adsorbed onto the resin surfaces and left-
behind.
Evaporation & Crystallization
Evaporation
The concentrated fine liquor leaving the evaporators is
subsequently boiled in a vessel known as a vacuum pan.

Fine sugar crystals are used as seed. The crystals are

grown to the required size by adding more liquor the
mixture of crystal and syrup called massecuite
Refined pans (white sugar)
Recovery pans (brown sugar)

Crystallization
The washed sugar discharge from
the centrifuge is dissolved in a
premelter to form melter liquor

The crystal then blasted with very dry

air to remove all the moisture and keep
the sugar from sticking together
