About CESP
The Centre for Economic Studies and Planning launched its MA Economics program in 1973 under the leadership of Prof.
Krishna Bharadwaj who brought together the first brilliant group of faculty members - Prof. Amit Bhaduri, Prof. Anjan
Mukherjee, Prof. Utsa Patnaik, Prof. Sunanda Sen and Prof. Prabhat Patnaik.
Krishna Bharadwaj was a highly gifted economist who made lasting contribution to economic theory in general and Indian
economic issues in particular. Since then, CESP has established itself as the leading institute in the country for learning
and research in the discipline of economics.
The Centre now offers 3 types of programs in economics: MA, M.Phil/PhD and Direct Ph.D.The Programs here are designed
and are continuously modified as per new insights, to address the biggest issue prevalent today - "A Gap between theoretical
and practical Economics".
Taught by a pool of highly motivated and highly distinguished faculty in an environment facilitated by world class
infrastructure, CESP has made a name for itself around the world. The appeal of the Centre can be gauged by the large
number of applicants from all over the country and the number of foreign students, including from the developed nations
like USA, UK, Germany, and France.

Where we fit in
ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL ANALYSIS: With the growing synchronization between the economic and financial market, it is of
essence that a student has detailed understanding of the repercussion each has on influencing the other. At CESP students are molded in a
way that they take in account all the macro and micro indicators while analyzing a market.
DATA ANALYSIS & FORECASTING: Clustering, categorizing and scrutinizing data and deciphering future trends is the starting step
to any business decision. With predictive models forming a part of the curriculum, students here are already a step ahead.
INVESTMENT BANKING: With an unabridged view of macroeconomic policy and excellence in quantitative skills, much needed for
investment bank, students from CESP play a crucial role in the investment decision making process.
RISK ADVISORY AND INSURANCE: Critical thinking, systems analysis, complex problem solving, judgment and decision making
are some of the skills needed for a career in risk management. Students at CESP are trained in these skills from the very beginning
through a diverse course structure.
DEVELOPMENT SECTOR: The course structure at the institute is designed in a way that forges a student to get a clear perspective of
what is happening in the economy. The seminars and talks organized by the institute facilitate the much needed global perspective in
issues to elevate the society.
RESEARCH: Various term papers in the curriculum set the ball rolling at a pretty early stage. Exhaustive readings nurture the student.
At CESP special attention is laid down to make sure students involve themselves in the field of research.
MEDIA AND PUBLISHING: With pellucid panorama of the existing issues and their possible solutions, students from CESP are well
suited for this sector. Moreover many students start publishing their research paper in different journals during the course of study,
giving an edge over others.
SALES & MARKETING: One cannot possibly think of selling a product without proper information about the market which the
company is targeting. The segmenting, market organising (monopoly, duopoly, competitive), pricing are the key parts for any sales. No
one is best suited for this sector as compared to economics students.
