complex life and work environments in the 21st
century, and those who are not.
A focus on creativity, critical thinking,
communication and collaboration is essential to
prepare students for the future.

TECHNOLOGY SKILL
Today we live in a technology and media-suffused
environment with: 1) access to an abundance of
information, 2) rapid changes in technology tools,
and 3) the ability to collaborate and make
individual contributions on an unprecedented
scale.
To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and
workers must be able to create, evaluate, and
effectively utilize information, media, and
technology.

Today's students need to develop thinking skills,
content knowledge, and social and emotional
competencies to navigate complex life and work
environments.

Technology (LwICT) means thinking critically
and creatively, about information and about
communication, as citizens of the global

HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS
Higher order thinking (HOT) is thinking on a level
that is higher than memorizing facts or telling
something back to someone exactly the way it
was told to you.
HOT takes thinking to higher levels than restating
the facts and requires students to do something
with the facts understand them, infer from
them, connect them to other facts and concepts,
categorize them, manipulate them, put them
together in new or novel ways, and apply them as

CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE
Creativity and innovation are at the heart of a powerful
shift occurring in our lives as society moves from an
industrial economy to a knowledge economy (Sawyer
2006; Florida, 2002).
There is growing recognition that to prepare our
students for the demands of 21st century jobs,
creative thinking, problem solving, communication,
innovation, collaboration and critical thinking skills are
equally important to academic and technical skills.
Creativity and innovation are life long skills and
practices that promote not only individuals but also our

CONTEXTUAL LEARNING
The contextual learning theory states that in
order for learning to take place, students must
be able to process the information being taught
in a way that is relevant to their lives.
Term such as hands-on learning and real world
education relate to contextual learning.
According to contextual learning, concepts that
are taught in the classroom should be present
in ways that are relevant to the child's real life
situations.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING (PBL)
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an innovative,
systematic teaching method that promotes
student engagement through deep
investigations of complex questions.
Put simply: Its learning by doing.
PBL focuses on imparting specific knowledge
and skills while inspiring students to question
actively,think critically, and draw connections
between their studies and the real world.
