Sonnet V
To Giovanni da Pistola
ON THE PAINTING OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL

In this hard toil Ive such a goiter grown,

Like cats that water drink in Lombardy,
(Or wheresoever else the place may be)
That chin and belly meet perforce in one.
My beard doth point to heaven, my scalp its place
Upon my shoulder finds; my chest, youll say,
A harpys is, my paintbrush all the day
Doth drop a rich mosaic on my face.
My loins have entered my paunch within,
My nether end my balance doth supply,
My feet unseen move to and fro in vain.
In front to utmost length is stretched my skin
And wrinkled up in folds behind, while I
Am bent as bowmen bend a bow in Spain.
No longer true or sane,
The judgment now doth from the mind proceed,
For tis ill shooting through a twisted reed.
Then thou, my picture dead,
Defend it, Giovan, and my honourwhy?
The place is wrong, and no painter I.
Michelangelo Buonarroti

Fernando
Amorsolo
The most celebrated name in the Philippine art, appealing to all social
classes a true National Artist.

He raised genre art to new heights.

For an artist, nothing damns with faint praises more than being called
Amorsoloesque or Amorsolo School

If the imitation is the sincerest form of flattery to an artist, forgery is the

final proof of his bankability. Investment in an Amorsolo is perceived by
many as better than money in the bank and the bluest chip of all. And his
stock , as they say in the investment market, continues to shoot through
the roof.

In his golden period, from about 1920 to 1945 he reaped various honors. He
went to Madrid in 1917 on scholarship from a rich Manila businessman,
Enrique Zobel.

The first portrait he did upon his return to Manila was that of his wife salud,
Which proclaimed the style he had develop in Madrid. People feasted their
eyes on it whenever they dropped in at his rented Soler Street house and
studio.
