Exercise 2:Map Projections

Contents
Task1: Define geographic coordinate system of a
shape file and then project it to IDTM coordinate
system
Task2: Import a coordinate system
Task3: Project a text file by using a pre defined
coordinate system
Task-1: Define geographic coordinate system of a shape file and
then project it to IDTM coordinate system

Datasets required: idll.shp

Start ArcCatalog, make connection to Ex-2 database, highlight idll.shp and check its projection/coordinate
system
Select ArcTool->DataManagementTools->ProjectionsandTransformations->DefineProjection
Select idll.shp as input feature class
Open spatial reference properties dialog box and click select
Double click geographic coord. System, North America and North American datum 1927.prj and click OK
Check spatial reference system of idll.shp . It should be GCS_North_American_1927
Select ArcTool->DataManagementTools->ProjectionsandTransformations->Project
Select idll.shp as input feature class and select idtm.shp as output feature class
Open spatial reference properties dialog box, click dropdown arrow and select projected
Enter IDTM as coord. Sys name, Transeverse_Mercator as projection name, 2500000 as FE, 1200000 as FN, -114
as Central_Meridian, 0.996 as scale factor, 42 as latitude of origin and meters as units
Click select for geographic coordinate system, double click North America and North American datum 1983.prj
Click OK to dismiss new projected coordinate system dialogue box
Click save as in the spatial reference properties dialog and enter idtm83.prj as the file name and dismiss Spatial
Reference Properties dialog.
Click geographic transformations dropdown arrow and select NAD_1927_To_NAD_1983_NADCON
Click OK to run command
Task-2: Import a coordinate system

Datasets required: stationsll.shp in lat,long in decimal degrees

Start ArcCatalog, make connection to Ex-2 database, highlight stationsll.shp and check its
projection/coordinate system
Select ArcTool->DataManagementTools->ProjectionsandTransformations->DefineProjection
Select stationsll.shp as input feature class and click the button for coordinate system
Click import in the spatial reference properties dialog and double click idll.shp to add. Dismiss
the dialogs.
Double click project tool
Select stationsll.shp as input feature class and stationstm.shp as output feature class and click
button for output coordinate system
Click import in the spatial reference properties dialog. Double idtm.shp to add.
Dismiss spatial reference properties dialog
Click geographic transformations dropdown arrow and select
NAD_1927_To_NAD_1983_NADCON
Click OK to complete the operation
stationsll.shp is projected to stationstm.shp
Task-3: Project a text file using a pre defined coordinate system

Datasets required: snow.txt, a text file containing geographic coordinates of 40 snow cources
Start ArcMap, Click Tools menu and select Add XY data
Select snow.txt as input table, longitude as X field and Latitude as Y field
Click the Edit button to open spatial reference properties dialog box
Click select, double click geographic coordinate systems, North America and North American
datum 1983.prj and dismiss the dialogs
Snow.txt Events is added to ArcMap
Double click the project tool, select Snow.txt Events as input featureclass and specify
snowutm83.shp as output featureclass
In the spatial reference properties dialog, double click projected coordinate systems, UTM,
NAD 1983 and NAD 1983 UTM Zone 11N.prj
Click OK to project the dataset
