 Power is developed from IC engine (or) by
motor
The power is transmitted from driving shaft
to driven shaft by a process is called
Transmission
Usually power is transmitted from one shaft
to another shaft by means of belts, ropes ,
chains , and gears

Belts, ropes and chains are used where the
distance between the shaft is large
For small distance gears are used
Belts and Ropes are not having constant
velocity ratios whereas chains and gears have
constant velocity ratios

 When a belt is used for power transmission it
is called a belt drive
Belts are used for transmitting power from
one shaft to another shaft
Rotary motion is transmitted from driving
pulley to driven pulley
The belts and ropes are running over the
pulleys the pulley are mounted on the two
shafts
 Leather belts
cotton (or) fabric belts
Rubber belts
Balata belts
 Open belt drive
Cross belt drive
Quarter turn belt drive
Quarter turn belt drive with guide pulley
Compound belt drive
Open belt drive is used where shafts are
arranged in parallel and moving in same
direction
Cross belt drive is used where shafts are
arranged in parallel and rotating in opposite
direction
 Quarter turn belt drive is used when shafts
are arranged at right angles and rotating in
one particular direction
This type of belt drives are used when an open
belt drive cannot be employed due to small
angle of contact over the smaller pulley and
when the required tension on the belt cannot
be obtained by another means
This type of belt drive is used when power is
transmitted from one shaft to another
through a number of pulleys
Belts are used in marine diesel engine
drive on an air compressor
etc
 When a rope is used for power transmission it
is called a rope drive
The ropes drives are widely used where a
large amount of power is to be transmitted
from one pulley to another
The ropes drives are the following two types of
ropes
Fiber ropes
Wire ropes
The fiber ropes operates successfully when the
pulleys are about 60m apart, while the wire
ropes are used when the pulleys are up to
150m apart
 Ropes are used in varies industries and
factories
 One belts and ropes drive that slipping may
occur. In order to avoid slipping ,steel chains
are used
 The chains are mostly used to transmit
motion and power from one shaft to another
Chains are used for transmission of power in
bicycles, motor vehicles, road rollers and
agricultural machinery etc
 When a gear is used for power transmission it
is called a gear drive
For small distance gears are used to transmit
motion from one shaft to another
A combination of two or more , which are
arranged in such a way that power is
transmitted from a driving shaft to a driven
shaft , is called a gear train
The gears may consist of
Spur gears(or) Helical gears
Bevel gears
(or)
Spiral gears
The parallel and co planar shafts connected by
gear. These gears are called spur gear
The gears used to connect two non parallel and
non intersecting shafts are known as spiral
gears. They are used where small power is to
be transmitted
 Gears are used in
metal cutting machines
power plants
mechanical clocks and
watches
washing machines
steel mills
etc
