Introduction

Background of the study

Over the years, smoking has increasingly

been viewed negatively by society at large for
a variety pf reasons. The smell, the health
consequences and even the health purpose all
combine to give traditional cigarettes a bad
name this days. If you are smoker, you have
certainly noticed an increasing amount of
restrictions around where you can light up a
cigarette, because it can cause a side effects
in our body, especially in our lungs.
Also traditional cigarette can have impacts on
your social life. Traditional cigarette by default
pose serious fire hazard because you are using
open flame if you light it. Cigarettes in fact, the
number one cause of fire related. If orientals
smoking devices were cool years ago, now
it is all about the e-fashion. And in 1965, Herbert A.
Gilbert patented this invention of electronic
cigarette or Vape, Many people had already
using it now and then. By using vape it really takes
the user away from the tobacco cigarettes or
popular cigarettes. Users of vape has their own
reasons why he/she is not smoking cigarette
anymore. Many users of electronic cigarettes are
the youths. Electronic cigarettes are less harmful
alternative to smoking and significant help
benefits are expected in smokers who switch from
to electronic cigarettes.

Theoretical Framework

E-Cigarette, caught the attention of many

researchers to study the reasons on what are the
motivations and why the youth find it more
interesting than the popular cigarettes. Some
researchers found also that E-Cigarette is more
safer and has the reduction of chemicals than
popular cigarettes.
Based on the theory of Sigmund Freud,
Psychosexual Development, Oral Stage, explains
that during the infants development, the infant
focuses on satisfying hunger orally which an infants
sexual pleasure and comfort centers on suckimg,
chewing, biting and accepting thiugs into the mouth
during the Psychodynamic stage. So that, some
youth are
In Schachters view, in order to maintain
habitual levels of cellular nicotine and to avoid
withdrawal. Interestingly, Schachter (1971, 1977,
1978; Schachter and Rodin 1974) has proposed
that different types of factors determine obesity
and smoking. The distinction is necessary in order
to defend biological causality in the case of
excessiveness both in
With this background, the researcher wants to study on
what are the motivations of the youth in smoking
Electronic Cigarette than Tobacco cigarette. activities
that are common to most people eating and drinking
alcohol and activities that only some indulge in
smoking and narcotics use.

Statement of the problem
The main problem of this study is to
know ther motivations in taking electronic
cigarette and their significant effects
especially on the Palompon youth. The study
intends to answer the following questions:
1.What is the demographic profile of the
respondents in terms of:

1.1Age started using vape

1.2Sex
1.3Statuts
1.4Employment Status
1.5Brand of Electronic Cigarette

2.What are the motivations of the

respondents in using vape?

3.What are the effects to the health of

using vape to the respondent?
Hypothesis

1.There is a significant relationship between

respondents and environment.

2.There is a significant difference on their

motivations based on their demographic profile.

3.There is an significant effect profile to their

health. based on their demographic.
Significance of the study

Results of this study will be a great help to the

following:
Parents. This will help the parents of the youth to
understand the effect of electronic cigarette to
the health of their child.
Youths. This will also help the youths who will take
this survey since they will also be aware on hos this
electronic cigarette affect their health
development.
Researchers. The results of this study will also be
a contribution to the local literature for the
researchers in their depth study about the
electronic cigarette.
Health Workers. This will also help the health
workers to fast identify and understands their
patients health especially for those addicted
to electronic cigarette.
Scope and Delimitation

This study is delimited on the motivations

of the youth in using vape who are currently
living in Palompon, Leyte. The researcher will
only focus the youth of the Palompon
considering their large number of population.
Also, the result of this study may reflect to the
motivations of all the youth considering not only
the youth are engage on it but also the adult
ones.
Definition of Terms

Addiction is a condition that results when a

person ingests a substance (e.g.,
alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity
that can be pleasurable but the continuation of
which becomes compulsive and interferes with
ordinary responsibilities and concerns, such as work,
relationships, or health.
Brand refers to the type of electronic cigarette used
like NJOY OneJoy, Aer Disposable, Flavorvapes, Blu,
GreenSmoke, EonSmoke, Vapor King Storm, Totally
Wicked Tornado, Volcano Lavatube and others.
Electronic Cigarette re battery-operated
devices that people use to inhale an aerosol,
which typically contains nicotine (though not
always), flavorings, and other chemicals.
They can resemble traditional tobacco
cigarettes(cig-a-likes), cigars, or pipes, or
even everyday items like pens or USB memory
sticks. Other devices, such as those with
fillable tanks, may look different
Motivations are reasons why youth are using
electronic cigarette
Psychosexual Development Theory Freuds Stages of
Psychosexual Development are, like other stage
theories, completed in a predetermined sequence
and can result in either successful completion or a
healthy personality or can result in failure, leading to
an unhealthy personality. This theory is probably the
most well known as well as the most controversial, as
Freud believed that we develop through stages
based upon a particular erogenous zone.
During each stage, an unsuccessful completion
means that a child becomes fixated on that
particular erogenous zone and either over or
under-indulges once he or she becomes an adult.
Respondents refer to the youth of Palompon who
own the electronic cigarette.
Youth refers to the people of both sexes from 15
to 29 years old of the Palompon.
Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Conceptual Literature

The researcher used books about Sigmund

Freud Theory and networking sites that can help
them to work with their research study. They wants
to study about how the youth influenced and
made a decision in using vape. According to
Social Cognitive Theory, emphasizing the role of
interactions environmental, and behavioral
factors.
Based on the Behavioural theories (or behaviourism
by John B. Watson) focus on how people learn to
behave in particular ways. Behaviourism was born
from two main schools of thought: Classical
conditioning of Ivan Pavlov, whereby a person learns
to associate two previously unrelated stimuli. In terms
of smoking, a person can learn to associate smoking
with other feelings and events such as being in a
stressful situation or having a coffee and these
situations then automatically induce cravings and
cue his or her smoking behavior.
Operant conditioning, which posits that behaviour is
shaped by its consequences. When nicotine is
inhaled, it causes a rapid release of dopamine, in
turn causing feelings of pleasure that reward and
reinforce the behaviour. This pleasure and
reinforcement drive the process of addiction.
Behavioural approaches to cessation focus on
changing habits and patterns that cue smoking,
replacing smoking with a different, more desirable
behaviour, rewarding abstinence, and emphasizing
the immediate and longer term benefits of quitting
According to the Religious views on smoking,
many religious traditions instruct their members on
what is permissible in respect to diet, exercise, and
drug use. Religion and religious authorities can be
important influences on smoking and quitting,
particularly in places where they hold great
importance to the population. Smoking has been
described by Christian leaders as contrary to the
original form of mans creation, and the Vatican
has forbidden smoking in closed public spaces,
places frequented by the public, and
workplaces. The Mormon Church (of Jesus Christ
and the Latter Day Saints) and the Seventh Day
Adventist Church have been active for many
years in encouraging both
members and the public more generally to give
up smoking. Indeed the lower incidence of
cancer and heart disease among Seventh Day
Adventists, who generally do not smoke or drink,
provided evidence that helped to consolidate
the case that implicated smoking as a cause of
lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. A study
in the US found that religiously active people
were less likely to smoke, and if they did, they
smoked fewer cigarettes.
Many other religions, including Islam and
Buddhism, have religious principles that forbid or
discourage the use of addictive substances.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
Research Design

The researcher used a survey method

since they collected data and informations
reported by individuals. They have a respondents
to answer their following questioners that is
connected to their significant problem.
Research Environment

The researcher conducted a survey

Researcher Subjects

The researcher conducted a survey

study to the 15 youths that currently living in
the Palompon, Leyte. And also, they knew
the population of the electronic cigarette
users.
Research Instruments

The researcher used a questionnaires to

conduct the survey study. A questionnaire is a
paper-and-pencil instrument that is administered to
the respondents.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researcher went to the different street of the
town of Palompon to conduct a survey. And they
collect all the answered questionnaires so that they
can prove their study about the electric cigarette.
