Milk is the important drink in the type of TCS food (Temperature Controlled for Safety). Thus, in

dairy farming a bulk milk cooling tank is a large storage tank for cooling and holding milk at a cold

temperature until it can be picked up by a milk tank. The bulk milk cooling tank is an important

piece of dairy farm equipment. A milk cooling tank consists of insulation, an inner outer surface

which made from high quality stainless materials for keeping milk in high quality.

INTRODUCTION
For keeping milk in high quality, it exists some advices in the best
conditions, such as:

Fresh long-life milk

Concentrates Powders

NEVERTHELESS, FRESH MILK IS DIFFICULT FOR KEEPING AS HIGH QUALITY

INTRODUCTION
- IT IS TO BE DETERMINED IF THE MILK CAN BE TRANSPORTED WITHIN THE LONG

DISTANCE WITHOUT USING THE REFRIGERATED SYSTEM!

- THE CALCULATION AND SIMULATION WOULD BE USED

CONCEPT OF THE STUDY

Concept of Heat Transfer

Heat: The form of energy that can be transfer from one system to another causing by the

temperature difference.

Heat Transfer: The science that deals with the determination of rate of such energy transfer

causing by the temperature difference.

Heat can be transferred in three difference modes such as conduction, convection and

radiation.

In our problem the radiation heat transfer is included in the ambient temperature to facilitate

our calculation.

CONCEPT OF THE STUDY

Concept of Heat Transfer

Hypotheses and Properties

- The distance of transportation is 1500 Km

- Thermal properties of milk and insulation are constant

- The properties of insulation is K=0.029 W/moC

- Density of milk is 1033 Kg/m3

- Specific heat of milk is 3790 J/KgoC

- The average ambient temperature 40 oC including the effect of

radiation heat transfer from the sun

CONCEPT OF THE STUDY

Concept of Heat Transfer

- There is no thermal contact resistance between the metal sheets, thus

- The temperature of the inner surface and the milk are equal

- The temperature of the outer surface and the ambient are equal

- The milk temperature would not exceed 6 oC on arrival

- The precooled temperature of milk is 3 oC

- The average velocity of the truck is taken to be 50Km/h

Theory and Calculation

By using the theories in Heat Transfer, we will determine in this case whether can
be transported without any refrigeration.

Concept of SolidWorks for design a Milk Tank Model

SolidWorks (stylized as SOLIDWORKS) is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD)

and computer-aided engineering (CAE) computer program that runs on Microsoft Windows.

Our team has been using SolidWorks for designing the Milk Tank.

CONCEPT OF THE STUDY

Concept of Abaqus for analysis and simulation

Abaqus is a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software package developed by Dassault

Systemes commonly used in various disciplines of Engineering. The use of FEA tools

has become widespread due to increased computation power and the ability of FEA

software packages to simulate incredibly complicated components, structures and

systems under a wide variety of situations and loading conditions.

Our team has been using Abaqus for analysis

and simulation Temperature the Milk Tank.

As a result, the value of the arrival temperature T2 is smaller than the allowable

temperature (6 oC), means that the milk can be transported without using refrigerated

system.

RESULTS
Results of Abaqus for analysis the simulation

The value of temperature after simulation have shown that it is range from 3 to 6 oC

in the inside layer which will be considered as the milk temperature. Thus, our result

is in acceptable range for the milk transportation.

RESULTS
As a result, the final temperature of the milk is 4.4535 C. We would observe that the

final temperature inside the tank is in the acceptable range. This means that we are able

to transport the milk via milk bulk tank without any refrigerated systems. Because of our

assumptions, the result is not quite accurate comparing to the real conditions(The thermal

properties of milk and insulation are not constant etc).

Suggestion: The thickness of insulation should be in the range of 2 to 6 cm for

refrigerated trucks.
