Group Discussion Summary
What was the result of your group discussion?

We recognized that Empathy is the key to it all because it brings out the latent requirements which
make or break a product. Ideation and Prototyping are different things. This entire process is a on-
going one which iteratively brings about improvements in products. Design thinking is not just for
software and can be applied to almost any scenario.
We realized that design thinking is about imbibing the values and not a set template to accomplish
things. The more we do, better it is ingrained .
Managers will have a tough time quantifying this. Hence they need to experience this first hand.Audio
Visual aids will help them get a good head start.
We need to look more into ethnography as most of us arent aware of this field and what it entails.

Individual POVs
Please add the team members individual POVs in the format: [USER] needs to [USERS NEED] because/surprisingly [INSIGHT]

Mayur Bulbule POV

[USER] Prakash in his early 30s is a diet conscious person. He rarely visits the vending machine [NEED] whenever he feels hungry and wants to
eat something healthy. [INSIGHT] But unfortunately he finds all items in the machine are unhealthy or have any information on the ingredient or
calorie intake and expiry dates.

[USER] Santosh is a college student aged 20 frequently visits the vending machine at his campus. [NEED] He loves to eat Lays chips on the way
home. [INSIGHT] But most of time the vending machine is not refilled and couldnt find his favourite Lays chips, ultimately makes him angry.

[USER] Lucas is a travel consultant. He has frequent business trips abroad. [NEED] He always goes to the vending machine for snacks during his
interconnecting flights. [INSIGHT] He always finds difficulty as he only has Indian currency and destination country currency. At this point of time he
thinks it would have been great if vending machines have cashless transactions.

Disha Shah POV [USER] Gaurav is a 35 year old IT Professional. He visits vending machine which is kept in his canteen [NEED] when he goes
for tea in the evening . [INSIGHT] He likes to have biscuits during his tea but the stock is always over in the machine till the time he comes which
leads him hungry and he suffers headache.

Tabish Khan POV [USER] Devendra an energetic and health conscious person. [NEED] drinks water every hour and other drinks after 3 hours.
[Insight]taking fluids every hour keeps body hydrated and make you feel energetic.

Rahul Chatta POV

[USER] Nadeem in his early 30s is a physically challenged person. He rarely visits the vending machine [NEED] Ability to use the vending machine
[INSIGHT] There are a lot of places where businesses tap physically challenged workforce in their organization. Surprisingly, this aspect seems to
have gone unnoticed in most of the organizations. Vendors can consider this as a untapped market potential.
[USER] Shiva in his early teens has never used a vending machine. He rarely visits the vending machine [NEED] Ability to use the vending
machine without requiring a guiding hand quickly [INSIGHT] Most of the first time users struggle with currency not accepted , item not dispensed,
not knowing what to click in what order and they are helpless. One of the users I spoke to mentioned what if, the vending machine would guide
folks to resolve issues, just like a printer does, by showing them a replica of what needs to be clicked, instead of just static text signs on the
machine.
Rest of my cases are common to what Mayur has pointed, so not mentioning them.

Final POV

[USER] Vishnu in his early 30's is a business consultant. He frequently visits vending machine [NEED]
whenever he feels hungry and wants to eat something. [INSIGHT] Vishnu would be super excited if the
vending machine pays off in 10 seconds or less, even more if it works without cash.

How did you decide on this final version?

Since we communicated on WhatsApp, we put our initials to indicate who the inputs came from instead
of colour coding.
We put in our insights at the same time together. Then we read through the list and identified a few
common patterns and made them a logically grouped unit of their own . We spoke about the kind of
person we had spoken to and built a persona around them.

Brainstorming

Selected Ideas

Safest Bet:

Have a advisory about cash/currency exchange and let individuals deal with it

Most Radical:
Build a net banking interface into the vending machine. Along with cards, direct payments can be made too.

Most Meaningful:
Provide a note exchanging machine along with every vending machine.

Week 5
Individual Prototypes

Prototype Mayur
The user requests cashless transactions and better overall performance of the vending machine. I have introduced the concept of Smart
Cards.

Smart Card Advantages:

1. Cashless transaction.
2. Similar to the metro transit cards.
3. Can be made easily available at every store outlet with easy top-up recharge options.
4. No risk of loss of card or fraudulent transactions as the amount in the card is very less.
5. Can use any currency (INR, EUR, USD) for online top-up/ recharge.

The Vending Machine will have a touch screen interface for product selection to make it more hassle free and better user experience and
better machine response. The UI flow consists of 4 steps which is attached in next slide.

Individual Prototypes

User Journey Steps:

1. User has options to choose between snacks and drinks.
2. We have product catalog where user can simply select one or many items
and click on OK button. User can double tap for multiple quantities. User
can also go to drinks catalog if required by clicking on the Snacks button
on top and change it to Drinks.
3. This is the final order screen. User can review his order and click on buttons
provided at the bottom of screen. CASH to pay using cash. SMART
CARD to pay cashless.

Note: Smart Card need to be generic and accepted by all vendors who build the
machines.

Prototype Rahul
The user requests cashless transactions and better overall performance of the vending machine. I have introduced the concept of direct pay.

Advantages:
1. Cashless transaction.
2. Hooks upto the bank interface. Most of the business logic is not exposed on vending machine. No Ned to worry about which
currency, how to pay, exchange rate, pre defined currency limit etc.

The Vending Machine will have a touch screen interface for product selection to make it more hassle free and better user experience and
better machine response. The UI flow is as follows.
