BIOTECHNOLOGY - GENETICALLY-MODIFIED FOOD

Introduction

Manipulating DNA

* Genes change every day by natural mutation and recombination,

creating new biological variations.

* Humans have been exploiting this for centuries mixing genes in

increasingly systematic ways and using extensive crossing and artificial
selectionto create many combinations that would never otherwise
have occurred.

* Just about everything we eat is derived from livestock, crops, and

microorganisms bred specifically to provide food.

* Humans have also redistributed genes geographically.

* So, DNA has never been static, neither naturally nor at the hand of
people.

* Genetic modification is an extension of this.

BIOTECHNOLOGY - GENETICALLY-MODIFIED FOOD
Definition

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms in

which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does
not occur naturally. The technology is also called genetic engineering.
It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism
into another, even between non-related species.

Such methods are used to create GM plants which are then used to
grow GM food crops.
BIOTECHNOLOGY - GENETICALLY-MODIFIED FOOD
Definition

The term GM foods is most commonly used to refer to crop plants

created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular
biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory
to enhance desired characteristics such as increased resistance to
herbicides, or against plant diseases caused by insects or viruses, or
improved nutritional content.

(The enhancement of desired traits has traditionally been undertaken

through breeding, but conventional plant breeding methods can be very
time consuming and are often not very accurate. Genetic engineering,
on the other hand, can create plants with the exact desired trait very
rapidly and with great accuracy.)

Observe that the initial goal for developing plants based on GM

organisms was to improve crop protection.

Some of the advantages of GM foods

The world population has topped 7 billion people and is predicted to

double in the next 40 years.
Ensuring an adequate food supply for this booming population is going
to be a major challenge in the years to come. GM foods promise to meet
this need in a number of ways:

Pest resistance. Avoid crop losses from insect pests.

Herbicide tolerance. Help weeds removal.

Disease resistance. Against many viruses, fungi and bacteria that

cause plant diseases.

Some of the advantages of GM foods

Cold tolerance. Protect against unexpected frost that can destroy

sensitive seedlings.

Drought tolerance/salinity tolerance. As the world population grows

and more land is utilized for housing instead of food production, farmers
will need to grow crops in locations previously unsuited for plant
cultivation. Creating plants that can withstand long periods of drought or
high salt content in soil and groundwater will help people to grow crops
in formerly inhospitable places.

Nutrition. Malnutrition is very common in many countries, then adding

adequate amounts of all necessary nutrients to prevent it.

Pharmaceuticals. To develop edible medicines and vaccines in GM

plants.

Phytoremediation. Not all GM plants are grown as crops. Soil and

groundwater pollution continues to be a problem in all parts of the
world. Plants such as poplar trees have been genetically engineered to
clean up heavy metal pollution from contaminated soil.

Some of the criticisms against GM foods

Genetically modified foods raise many issuesscientific, technological,

environmental, social, ethical, economic, and political, among others.

So, environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest

groups, professional associations and other scientists and government
officials have all raised concerns about GM foods, and criticized
agribusiness for pursuing profit without concern for potential hazards,
and the government for failing to exercise adequate regulatory oversight.

Most concerns about GM foods fall into three categories: environmental

hazards, human health risks, and economic concerns.

Some Conclusions

Genetically-modified foods have the potential to solve many of the

world's hunger and malnutrition problems, and to help protect and
preserve the environment by increasing yield and reducing reliance
upon chemical pesticides and herbicides. Yet there are many challenges
ahead for governments, especially in the areas of safety testing,
regulation, international policy and food labeling. Many people feel that
genetic engineering is a technology that has such enormous potential
benefits. However, we must proceed with caution to avoid causing
unintended harm to human health and the environment as a result for
this powerful technology.
