SPESIFIC HEAT CAPACITY
Work out the specific heat capacity of a material
if a 500 g block needs 12 kJ to heat it by 50 oC.
(Leave your answer in SI unit).
MICROMETER SCREW
HEAT
The specific heat capacity of water is 4200
J/kgoC. Find the energy needed to heat 500 g of
water from 20 oC to 50 oC. (Leave your answer in
kJ).
VERNIER CALIPER
THERMAL EXPANSION
A rod of metal is measured at 285 K and is 3 m
long. At 385 K the rod is 3.004 m long.
Determine the value of the coefficient of linear
expansion for the metal.
THERMAL EXPANSION
A length of lead pipe is 50.0 m in long at a
temperature of 20oC. When hot water flows
through it the temperature of the pipe rises to
80oC. Determine the length of the hot pipe if the
coefficient of linear expansion of lead is 0.00
000 3/K.
TEMPERATURE
Alumunium has a specific heat capacity of 900
J/kgoC. What temperature change will happen
when 5 kg of alumunium is heated using 90 kJ of
energy.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
A dog jumps over a fence. How does the dogs
potential energy change on the way up?
How does the dogs potential energy change on
the way down?
When is the dogs potential energy greatest?
MECHANICAL ENERGY
A quarterback throws a football weighing 200 g
at a speed 36 km/h at a height of 20 m. What is
the footballs mechanical energy?
KINETIC ENERGY
A truck weighing 10 000 kg has 80 000 J of
kinetic energy. What speed it is travelling at?
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Which has more potential energy?
a. A hammer weighing 700 g raised to 3 m.
b. A rock weighing 1 800 g raised to 2 m.
c. A nail weighing 0.05 kg raised to 5 m.
