Indonesias country risk: a highlight
Few sovereign bonds have suffered as precipitous a loss of creditworthiness as
those of the Republic of Indonesia. Standard & Poors credit ratings on
Indonesias US$400 million Yankee bond and US$300 million Euro floating-rate
note (with US$26 million outstanding, following puts in 1993 and 1996) have
fallen by no less than eight notches, to CCC+ at present from BBB in mid-
1997.
The ratings trajectory, however, is unlikely to display such symmetry, and
Indonesias bond ratings are unlikely to emerge from the lowest rungs of
Standard & Poors ratings scale for years to come.
Thus, the outlook for Indonesia over a time period equivalent to the typical life
of an emerging market sovereign bond, i.e., 5-7 years, is entirely consistent with
Standard & Poors low-investment-grade credit ratings, alongside those of
Russia, Romania, Ecuador, and Pakistan.
