The Five Kingdoms

Living things are classified into different

taxonomic major group and sub group according
to common observable characteristic

Introduced by Robert Whittaker

1. Monera
2. Protista
3. Fungi
4. Plantae
5. Animalia
Characteristics to differentiate:
The number of cell unicellular

organisms(living things)
multicellular

Nucleus with membrane

Prokaryotes: Organisms that consist of cell without a
membrane around the nucleus

Eukaryotes: Organisms that consist of cells that have a

membrane around the nucleus
Cell wall
protects and supports the cell.
It adds strength.
Cell wall is made from a tough
flexible material called cellulose.
Large vacuole
It is a membrane enclosed sac
within the cell, it stores food, liquid,
and is a disposal site for waste
materials.
chloroplast
Chloroplasts convert solar energy
(sun light) into a chemical energy
("food/nutrient") via photosynthesis.
Base on ability to
make their own food
Autotroph
organisms that can make their own food
Heterotroph
organisms that cannot make their own food

The Protist Kingdom
EUKARYOTES
Some contain
Chloroplasts(algae).
Some have cell wall
(diatom)
Some have large vacuole
Some AUTOTROPH
Little creatures
floating in a drop of
pond water.
Some single celled.
Protista
Most one celled organisms, eukaryotic, most live
in water
PROTOZOA animal-like, one-celled, move,
heterotroph(dont make food)
ALGAE plant-like, most one-celled, have
chloroplast, autotroph(make food)
Amoeba proteus
KINGDOM FUNGI
Eukaryotic cell
Heterotropic (have no chloroplast)
HAVE CELL WALL
NO LARGE VACUOLE
Some are unicellular (yeast)
most of them are multicellular
(mould and mushroom)
KINGDOM PLANTAE
EUKARYOTIC
MULTICELLULAR
CELL WALL
LARGE VACUOLE (usually 1)
AUTOTROPIC by photosynthesis
Ex : mosses, ferns, conifers, flowering plants
KINGDOM ANIMALIA

MULTICELLULAR
EUKARYOTES
NO CELL WALL
SMALL AND MANY VACUOLES
HETEROTROPIC BY INGESTION
SHOW LOCOMOTION
1. Is this organism unicellular or multicellular?
Why?

2. Is this cell prokaryotes or eukaryotes?

Why?
WHICH ONE IS AUTOTROPH ORGANISM?
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON
?
