1
History of OCB
Dennis Organ is considered the father
of OCB.

Dennis Organ expanded upon Katz's

(1964) original work on OCB.

Dennis Organs (1988) definition of

OCB has drawn a great deal of
criticism

2
What is OCB??
Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB),
is defined as behavior that

(a) goes beyond the basic requirements of

the job (call of duty)

(b) is to a large extent discretionary, and

(c) is of benefit to the organization

3
ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP
BEHAVIOUR (OCB)

Work behavior can be seen in terms of in-

role and extra-role behavior.

Willingness to engage in extra-role

behavior is indicative of high OCB

OCB is willingness to go that extra mile

OCB is product of high level of motivation

and commitment

4
OCB(Cont..)
High OCB related to high performance level and
less need for hierarchical control.

Individuals become self driven

Also reflective of willingness to be resourceful

beyond immediate role requirement.

5
Review of Literature
Individual behaviour that is discretionary, not
directly or explicitly recognized by the formal
reward system, and that in the aggregate promotes
the effective functioning of the organization. By
discretionary, we mean that the behaviour is not an
enforceable requirement of the role or the job
description, that is, the clearly specifiable terms of
the persons employment contract with the
organization; the behaviour is rather a matter of
personal choice, such that its omission is not
generally understood as punishable (Organ, 1988)
Antecedents:
Helping Behaviour

OCB: a necessary action

In extreme cases the employees come to believe that

OCBs are simply part of their job (McAllister,

Kamdar, Morrison, & Turban, 2007; Morrison, 1994).
Critical Analysis
Lack of single dimensionality
Similar ideas conceptualized in distinct

manners by different researchers

Difficult to identify overall pattern
Increasing diversification makes it difficult to

track, except for most avid readers

Exponential growth in OCB research -

problem doing a meta analysis

Alignment with latest development becomes

troublesome
Impact on Employees
By enhancing productivity among co-workers

By enhancing productivity of manager

By freeing resources for more useful

purposes

By reducing the need of dedicated resources

for maintenance functions

15
Impact on Employees (cont.)

By coordinating between groups and teams

By making the workplace a more attractive

place to work at

By making organisational performance more

stable

By making organisation adept to

environmental changes
