Standards
and the OSI Model
Objectives
Identify organizations that set
standards for networking
Describe the purpose of the OSI Model
and each of its layers
Explain specific functions belonging to
each OSI Model layer
Objectives (continued)
Understand how two network nodes
communicate through the OSI model
Discuss the structure and purpose of
data packets and frames
Describe the two types of addressing
covered by the OSI Model
Networking Standards
Organizations
Standards: documented agreements
containing technical specifications or other
precise criteria stipulating how particular
products or services should be designed or
performed
Define minimum acceptable performance
Many different organizations have evolved to
oversee computer industrys standards
Importance of Standards
The primary reason for standards is to
ensure that hardware and software
produces by different vendors can work
together.
Standards also mean that customers are
not locked into one vendor.
It makes easier to develop software and
hardware that link different networks for it
can be developed one layer at a time.
Two types of standards
1. FORMAL
It is developed by an official industry
or government body. It takes several
years to develop, during which time
technology changes, making them
less useful
e.g., The race between Netscape and
Microsoft in Web browsers, standard
for HTML.
