Abstract
Increasing of demand due to improved
reliability, high data rates and low
deployment costs.
Recent improvements in DSP enabled us to
construct such transmission systems.
Majority of the worlds operators and vendors
are already committed to LTE deployments
and making LTE the market leader in the
upcoming evolution to 4G systems.
The customers of Ethiotelecom havent got
high QOS & high data rates yet.

Objectives
General Objectives
To cover
Introduction of MIMO
Why MIMO is chosen?
SU-MIMO Vs MU-MIMO
Different Techniques used in MIMO
MIMO-OFDM
Capacity of MIMO Channels
SU-MIMO channel and signal model
4
Specific objectives
Model MIMO fading channel handling
frequency-flat characteristics to perform MIMO channel
processing
MIMO algorithms of the first four transmission modes of the
LTE standard and their modeling in MATLAB and exploit two
algorithms:(i) transmit diversity (ii) spatial multiplexing, with
or without delay-diversity coding
LTE channel modeling and implements the three types of
channel model( pedesterian,urban & vehicular )
Program MATLAB function that shows the resource-element
mapping that implements the mapping for the SISO , SIMO ,
and MIMO cases.

5
Introduction
MIMO is Multiple Input Multiple Output.
It is an antenna technology that is used both in
transmitter and receiver equipment
MIMO takes advantage of multi-path.
LTE has been designed to support only Packet-
Switched (PS) services, with higher data rates &
QOS, higher mobility, Improved system latency.
MIMO techniques are integral components of
LTE.
LTE can be regarded as a MIMOOFDM
6
Statement of the problems
Why MIMO ?

Motivation: current Ethiotelecoms LTE

- Capacity constrained networks
- Low data rate, quality and coverage
One parameter can be increased only at the

cost of the other two.

MIMO exploits the space dimension to improve
wireless systems
Can improve capacity, range and reliability

7
Statement of the problems
Why SU-MIMO chosen over MU-MIMO?
SU-MIMO channel capacity is much easier
to derive for than for MU-MIMO.
SU-MIMO capacity results are known for
many cases where the corresponding MU-
MIMO problems remain unsolved .
Very little is known about multi-user
capacity
MU-MIMO has severe multi-user
interference
8
Methodology
1) Literature reviews about MIMO and LTE
will be conducted.
2) Combine both MIMO and LTE and will be
modeled the system.
3) Then program the system in Mathlab
7.0 software as a simulation tool.
4) Finally, the results were interpreted and
conclusion was drawn based on the
results obtained.
9
Limitations
(i) further enhancement of downlink SU-
MIMO to improve the system
throughout beyond what was achieved
in LTE;
(ii) introduction of uplink transmit
diversity utilizing up to four transmit
antennas;
(iii) extension of downlink transmit
diversity to eight transmit antennas;

Literature reviews
1) A paper called MIMO Technologies in 3GPP
LTE and LTE-Advanced by Juho Lee,1 Jin-
Kyu Han,1 and Jianzhong (Charlie) Zhang.
They introduced MIMO features of LTE downlink

SU-MIMO, transmit diversity, closed-loop rank-1

precoding, MU-MIMO, dedicated beamforming.
2) A thesis called PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF
SPACE TIME CODING ON MIMO AND
COOPERATIVE DIVERSITY SYSTEM by DEREJE
GIRMA
He studied MIMO schemes and simulate
Rayleigh fading channel and Rician fading
