BHS Community Service Program

The Community Service Program at Broughton High School is designed to teach citizenship skills and the value of serving
others. Service is a value firmly positioned in the mission of Broughton High School. It is also a required component of the
International Baccalaureate Program.
Community Service Guidelines
All students are required to complete 25 hours of approved community service hours each year they are enrolled at the school in
order to graduate. Even if a student enters their senior year with 100 hours of community service from previous years, they are
still required to perform 25 hours their senior year. Service hours must be performed for a NON-PROFIT, 501c organization
unless pre-approved by Mrs. Ashburn. This includes volunteering for organizations such as the SPCA, Food Bank, Habitat for
Humanity, any public school, church activities, public libraries and many more. When in doubt about whether or not an agency is a
non-profit, please ask the organization, a teacher/staff member, or the community service coordinator.
The maximum number of hours per day per event will not exceed 10 hours. Travel time is not included in the hours worked.
Babysitting and child care is accepted only for church nurseries or for non-profit organizations. Babysitting for a neighbor or a
family friend will not be approved for community service hours.
Dog sitting/walking or doing other work for a neighbor or friend does not count as community service.
Boy Scout Eagle Project hours are only approved for a Boy Scouts actual work on his project (not planning hours). Hours can
also be given to another Boy Scout who assists with an Eagle project.
Summer Counselor in Training camp hours are capped at 100 hours per camp session.
Students may not earn service hours for class sponsored activities such as Prom, Float Building, or Queen of Hearts as these are
class sponsored activities.
Service hours for BHS donations (canned food drives, BHS pantry, coat drive, etc.) will be available to students for a MAXIMUM
of 5 hours per year (1 hour earned for every $5 spent) with an attached receipt and based on the formula of $5 spent = 1
community service hour.
Service hours for nursing and retirement homes may count for community service hours though many times these
organizations are for profit.
Each completed community service form must be placed in the community service boxes in the front office or the cafeteria for
verification no later than one month after completion of the work. If turned in later than one month after completion, there
will be no guarantee that the hours will be able to be verified and entered.
Summer Service Hours must be turned in for verification by the end of 1st quarter.
Seniors must turn in ALL community service hours by the first week in March in order for the verification process to be
completed before graduation and for a student to qualify for exam exemptions. Seniors who miss this deadline will not be
exempt from exams. Underclassmen should turn in all hours by the first week of May of each year. All hours turned in after
this time will be counted toward the hours requirements for the next school year.
Junior and Senior Privileges privileges such as off-campus lunch passes, parking passes, student government participation,
Honor Society, Service Club, Homecoming and Queen of Hearts Courts are contingent upon successful completion of hours of
service for each year.
Silver Cord students who perform at least 25 additional hours of community service over their requirement for their years at
Broughton may earn a silver cord to wear at graduation. In order to receive the silver cord, a student MUST complete the
minimum of 25 hours per year. The silver cord designates the recipient as a Community Service Honors graduate.
Broughton Academic Honesty Guidelines apply to community service. If the information submitted on a community service form
is found to be untrue, the student will be denied Junior/Senior privileges and silver cord honors. Other academic integrity
consequences may apply.
** World Overcomers Church - Please note that we will no longer accept service hours completed at World Overcomers
Church. Contacts for this organization in the past have been fraudulent and we are unable to verify hours completed here.
Parents: If you are sponsoring an approved event for which large numbers of student volunteers are needed, a group form is
available from the Community Service Office so that students do not need to turn in individual forms
NEW THIS YEAR - Please note that there is now a place for Parents signature on the community service forms. This is only
required when students are doing service off-campus.
Questions? Please contact Sydney Lowe, in the Community Service Office at 919-856-7810, x23283 or slowe@wcpss.net. Students
may check the status of their community service hours with their CAPs class teacher or by going to www.bhs-commservice.org .
