Common Writing Errors

Comma Splice
is a common error of writers when a comma is
used in joining separating clauses instead of
using proper punctuation marks such as period,
semicolon, and colon. The misuse of comma can
appear in the following forms:

a. When the dependent clause contains or begins
with conjunctive adverbs: however, so on, then
Example:

Incorrect: I failed all the science subject of the last


semester, however, my parents did not scold me.

Correct: I failed all the science subject of the last


semester; however, my parents did not scold me.

b. When there is no grammatical relationship
between two clauses.

Incorrect: Many important matters were discussed


on the agenda, a monthly meeting was scheduled
for the AB Communication Arts Society.
Correct: Many important matters were discussed on
the agenda. A monthly meeting was scheduled for
the AB Communication Arts Society.

c. When two independent clauses related
Incorrect: Many important matters were
discussed on the agenda, a monthly meeting
was scheduled for the AB Communication Arts
Society.
Correct: Many important matters were
discussed on the agenda. A monthly meeting
was scheduled for the AB Communication Arts
