Today in History
1634 Anne Hutchinson arrives in the New World.
1793 George Washington lays the cornerstone to
the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Puritans Settle Massachusetts
Bay
Late 1620s persecution of dissenters in England was
increasing.

In 1629 Charles I granted a charter for the formation


of the Massachussets Bay Company, a joint-stock
company made up of Puritan businessmen.
Granted them land in New England.

The charter did not specify that the headquarters must


remain in England, which gave them the opportunity
for religious freedom.
Great Migration
In 1630, John Winthrop led a group of Puritans to
Massachusetts Bay to settle in a self-governing colony.
They established Boston and other towns.
The colony grew quickly and 25,000 Puritans came to
the New World over several years.
City on a Hill
Puritans came to New England in order to escape
religious persecution

They wanted to establish a colony where their religious


beliefs would influence the way society and the
government worked.
This resulted in a tightly-controlled society where
Church and government worked closely together.
Puritan Values
The character of the Puritans was a large contributing
factor to the colonys success.
Many puritans were successful and influential
businessmen.
Society was deeply rooted in the Bible
Most settlers were educated
They valued honesty, hard work and ingenuity.
Puritan Values
The Puritans valued education and founded Harvard
College in 1636 to prepare men for ministry in the
colony.
Puritans wanted everyone to read the Bible for
themselves, so education was vitally important.

They also wanted to evangelize to the Native Americans
to share the Truth of the Gospel.
John Eliot, a Puritan minister, learned the Algonquin
language in an effort to connect with and preach to the
Native Americans.
He also worked to translate the Bible into the
Algonquin language.
Eliot worked to organize missionary efforts, opposed
slavery
Puritan Values
While John Eliot was working with the Natives in
Massachusetts, Thomas Mayhew was working on the
island of Marthas Vineyard.
He established several Native American church
congregations before he died.
His family continued his work by translating the Psalms
and Gospel of John into the Native language.

The Puritans gave us a rich legacy:
Moral living
Integrity
Hard work
Industry
Frugality
Personal responsibility to God
Government should protect private property
Individual participation in government

All work has a sense of nobility
Christians serve best by working diligently and faithfully
in his calling.

This heritage became an important part of American culture


and laid the groundwork for a prosperous economy.
