 An Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a ground- based
radio beam transmitter that provides a direction to an aircraft
approaching and landing on a runway.

Approaching aircraft that tune their receiver to the ILS

frequency can get the guidance from ILS.

Consist two antennas which transmit signals to receivers in the

aircraft cockpit. These antenna signals activate the vertical and
horizontal needles inside the ILS indicator to tell the pilot either go
left/right or go up/down
A cockpit or flight deck is the area, usually near the
front of an aircraft or spacecraft, from which
a pilot controls the aircraft.
Why do pilot need ILS?
To enable safe landing during reduced
visibility due to fog, rain, or snow.
If an Aircraft is considerably heavy for a
runway length, guidance to the exact touch-
down zone is required.
In order to enable Auto-land in newer
aircrafts, ILS signals are essential.
 It uses a combination of radio signals (VHF-UHF) and, in
many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe
landing.

Provides horizontal navigation
Located at the northern end of the run way
Frequency of Operation: 108MHz to 117MHz (VHF)
Transmits two signals that overlaps at the center. The overlap area
provides the on-track signal
The left side has a 90 Hz modulation and the right side has a
150Hz modulation

Provides vertical navigation
Located at the southern end of the run way
transmits two beams:
The upper beam has a lobe that is modulated
with a 90 Hz signal
while the lower beam has a lobe that is
modulated at 150 Hz.
Frequency of Operation : 329 MHz to 335MHz (UHF)
The glide path has an angle of approximately 3 degrees.
