The first day or
two we all pointed
to our countries.
The third or fourth
day we were
pointing to our
continents. By the
fifth day we were
aware only of the
Earth.

We are preparing students for jobs
that do not yet exist, using
technologies that havent been
invented, to solve problems we
have never heard of.

Its less about the stuff you know, and more

about agile thinking, curiosity, creativity, and
developing a global mindset.
HOW
1. Take a stand: What do you stand for, and
how do you demonstrate that?
2. Pay attention: Hyper-local experiences,
global resources, friendships, assumptions
3. Do something: Curate media, take
adventures, serve others, allow for JOY
Take a Stand - What do you stand for?

Two-thirds of teachers (63 percent), parents (63 percent),

and Fortune 1000 executives (65 percent) think that
knowledge of other cultures and international issues is
absolutely essential or very important to be ready for college
and a career. MetLife Survey of the American Teacher:

moral courage, choices, lesson

Applying Global Mindset
to common lessons
In a unit on nutrition:
Students explore foods from around the world, graphing diets
against life spans. We compared diets high in starchy
vegetables with places where they eat dark green or sea
vegetables, she said. The connections the students drew were
powerful: They learned that people in China live longer than
black people in America. They discovered that wherever the
American diet was introduced, life spans declined.
In a unit on water conservation efforts:
What lessons can we learn from areas with long-standing
drought; from distinct enviro policies; innovation in water
resources? Look at Flint, MI example and look at water use
based on wealth. Add service-learning to the lesson: Build
empathy with Walk for Water & limited access.
Applying Global Mindset
to common lessons
Every class that Ive revised to include
international representation, I found that the
students made more connections because they
had a cultural anchor. And when I assessed what
they retained I got content-specific vocabulary
because it stuck, especially where they could
see aspects of themselves and of people they
knew. And the questions I got were better. I
stopped getting what questions and started
getting why questions, and what if
questions.

How can MATH enhance our Cognitive Complexity, Quest for
Adventure, Intercultural Empathy?

Dallas
A villager has earned $5.00 working in the cornfield
this week. She must buy supplies to ensure her
family is safe from hunger. Does she have enough
money?
Bus to market $0.12
Bag of rice $0.23 Tools $1.16
Seeds $0.98 Medicine $1.48
Milk $0.34 Bus fare home $0.12

Technology resources for building empathy, global perspectives,
student engagement lessons come alive:
Consider: How can apps & tools help
us to recognize perspectives?
Pick a perspective, any
perspective what are they talking
about today?
Do you know how to do a Google
Search??
Maybe not
Pick a topic: American Revolution? Iranian hostage
crisis? Climate change? Fashion??
What are they saying about it in ________??
site:ir Iranian hostage crisis
site:uk American Revolution
site: za Fashion week
Embrace technology as a tool for meaningful
connection, not an end in itself
