Telecommunications
Telecommunications is the science of
communicating over a long distance using
telephone or radio technology.
Involves using microelectronic (small
semiconductor chip), computer, and PC
technologies to transmit, receive, and switch
voice, data, and video communications over
different transmission media, including
copper, fiber, and electromagnetic
transmissions.
This definition implies that we are doing more
than just voice communications.

Telecom vs Telephony
When people use the word
telecommunications, most think of the
classical analog telephone. That is
telephony.
Telephony is focused on voice
communications. Telecommunications
has evolved into much more.

Telecom vs Telephony
The telephone network was originally
designed to carry human voice and not
digital information such as data, music,
or video.
It supported telephony (voice
communications), but not
telecommunications (data, image,and
video).

What is Telecom?
Telecommunications is the merging of
voice, data (WAN), LAN, video,image,
and wireless communications
technologies with PC and
microelectronic technologies to facilitate
communications between people or to
deliver entertainment, information, and
other services to people.

Datacom
Traditional data communications, or
WAN communications, were the
transmission of data (at that time text
and numbers) between sites. They
encompassed all the necessary
computer hardware, electronics, optical
equipment, and signaling techniques
required to send encoded information

Telecom Standards
Standards for building telephony voice
communications, data communications, LAN,
and wireless communications hardware and
software products are developed by several
national and international standards groups
Standards are especially important for
telecommunications because they are the
first step to assuring inter-operability of
products and services from many
telecommunications vendors.

Layer & Compatibility
Layer 1 covers speed compatibility. The
physical layer wiring and electrical
transmission can be summarized into two
simple data communications parameters:
speed and distance
Layer 2 The data link layer handles data
link protocol compatibility. The function of a
data link protocol is to get information from
Point A to Point B error-free. It uses message
handshakes to perform its

Layer & Compatibility
Layer 3 The network layer performs
routing compatibility, sending data from
source to destination. Layer 3 is
communications software. Internet
Packet (IP) protocol software used to
address and to route Internet messages
is an example of Layer 3

Layer & Compatibility
Layer 4 The transport layer provides
end-to-end message integrity
compatibility. It assures that entire
messages are moved through a network
from source to destination. It is
communications software. Transmission
Control Protocol (TCP) software
assuring message integrity for
information sent across the Internet is
an example of Layer 4

Layer & Compatibility
Layer 5 The session layer provides
the logical one-to-one or end-to-end
connection.
Layer 6 The presentation layer
provides is performed by the PCs
operating feature compatibility. This
software would be the Windows
environment. An example of Layer-6
Graphical User Interface program.

Layer & Compatibility
Layer 7 The application layer covers
operational compatibility. It is largely the
function of the application program to
solve operational compatibility. Today,
many programs accept data files in
different operational formats. Netscape
Navigator is an example of Layer-7
software.

Voice Communication
Voice communications are a continuous
stream of information with few interruptions.
Voice communications require a reliable,
continuously operating network;
There must be no transmission delays. The
information representing a voice signal must
arrive in the same order as it was transmitted.
A fixed transmission speed is required, and
few transmission errors are permitted
