The project was completed in three stages, each stage
consisting of two units of 210 MW each, thus the total
capacity being 1260 MW.

INTRODUCTION

Majority of the power plants in our country,

till today are thermal, i.e. heat generated by
burning mainly coal, produces steam in a
boiler and this steam at high temperature
and pressure is used to run a turbine
generator set.
The major equipment in Thermal Power Stations are:-
Boiler,
Turbine,
Generator,
Power transmission and Equipment

In Boiler, fuel is fired and steam is generated and

superheated under high Pressure. This superheated
steam under high pressure is supplied to High Pressure
Cylinder of steam turbine and expanded. The Low
Pressure exhaust steam from H.P cylinder is taken again
to the boiler and reheated.
The power plant cycle is divided into a number of Sub. cycles
each of which has its own instrumentation system and
simultaneously interacting with other cycles.

The broadly classified cycles are :-

Water cycle that includes the condensation, make up,

demineralization heating and deaeration, feed pump and
economizer.

Combustion cycle consisting of economizer, boiler super

heaters and reheater.

Steam cycle with boiler, superheaters, reheaters and turbines.

COAL HANDLING PLANTS

To have a reliable system for handling and, or,

processing
To economically handle large quantities, as compared
to other modes of handling
BOILER
Enclosed Pressure Vessel
Heat generated by
Combustion of Fuel is
transferred to water to
become steam
Process: Evaporation
Boiler types
Tower type boilers
Two pass boilers
Boiler auxiliaries

Air Pre heaters : To preheat the air supplied to the boiler using
exit flu gas. (Primary and secondary air).
ID Fans : To collect the flue gas from furnace and discharge
them into Chimney.
FD Fans : To supply the regained secondary air (Excess air) for
complete combustion.
ID & FD Fans : To maintain the balance draft conditions in the
furnace over the entire load range.
PA Fans : To dry, lift and transport coal from the pulverized
(Mill) into the furnace.
Mills : To pulverize (Grind) the coal prior to admission into the
furnace for effective combustion.
Turbine
A machine for producing continuous power in which a wheel or rotor,
typically fitted with vanes, is made to revolve by a fast-moving flow of water,
steam, gas, air, or other fluid.
Condensor

A condensor converts the steam from turbine back into water so

that the water can be pumped back to the boiler.
