ECDIS
Electronic Chart Display and
Information System
Not just a pictorial representation of a chart
A complex navigation device type approved ,
and displaying official data (ENC)
Type approval is from three international
bodies, and covers hardware, software and
charts

ENC and SENC
ENC Electronic Navigational Chart
Means the database, standardised as to content structure and format,
issued for the use with ECDIS on the authority of a government
authorised Hydrographic Office. The ENC contains all the chart
information necessary for safe navigation and may contain
supplementary information in addition to that contained on a paper
chart(eg Sailing Directions) which may be considered necessary for
safe navigation

SENC System Electronic Navigational Chart

Means a database resulting from the transformation of the ENC by
ECDIS for appropriate use, updates to the ENC by appropriate means,
and other data added by the mariner. It is this database that is actually
accessed by ECDIS for the display generation and other navigational
function, and is the equivalent of an up-to-date paper chart

To replace paper charts with ECDIS
ECDIS is the primary navigation source AND
Flag State permits use of ECDIS as primary navigation source, AND
Full complement of updated ENCs for intended voyage are
onboard AND
Type approved ECDIS with independent power source as backup,
AND
Flag state permits second ECDIS as back up navigation source,
AND
ENCs are installed on both primary and backup ECDIS systems,
AND
Documentation , including records of crew training are held on
board
