2
What is Six Sigma ?

Six Sigma is the process of improving the quality of the output by

identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing
variability in manufacturing and business processes.

3
Why we need Six Sigma

Degree of Shift in Mean Quality Level (# Defects per Million Opportunities)

(Number of Standard Deviations) 3 Sigma 4 Sigma 5 Sigma 6 Sigma
0.0 2700 63 0.57 0.002
0.5 6440 236 3.4 0.019
1.0 22832 1350 32 0.019
1.5 66803 6200 233 3.4
2.0 158,700 22800 1300 32

Origin of Six sigma

Motorola launched the Six Sigma program in the 1980s

General Electric initiated the implementation of Six Sigma in the mid-
1990s
Organizations in all industries have applied Six Sigma in recent years
Six Sigma has replaced TQM and BPR as the key strategy for quality
improvement

5
Features of Six Sigma

Improving Processes
Lowering Defects
Reducing process variability
Reducing costs
Increasing customer satisfaction
Increased profits

6
Six Sigma Methodologies

DMAIC - It refers to a data-driven quality strategy for improving

processes. This methodology is used to improve an existing business
process.

DMADV - It refers to a data-driven quality strategy for designing

products and processes. This methodology is used to create new
product designs or process designs in such a way that it results in a
more predictable, mature and defect free performance.

8
DMADV

DEFINE: Define the Problem or Project Goal that needs to be

addressed.
MEASURE: Measure and determine customers needs and
specifications.
ANALYZE: Analyze the process to meet the customer needs.
DESIGN: Design a process that will meet customers needs.
VERIFY: Verify the design performance and ability to meet customer
needs.
9
Tools Used In Six Sigma

1. QUALITY FUNCTION DEVELOPMENT

2. PROCESS MAP
3. FISH BONE DIAGRAM
4. PARETO DIAGRAM

10
Roles of belt color in Six Sigma

Yellow Belt : Yellow belt is all about training in overall methodology and
basic problem solving concepts
Green Belt : They focus on tools usage DMIAC and Lean application.
Black Belt : The person possessing this belt has achieved the highest skill
level and is an experienced expert in various techniques.
Master Black Belt : A person who deals with the team or its leadership;
but is not a direct member of the team itself.
