What are adjectives?

Adjectives modify the noun they are

paired with.

Les Adjectifs, In english:

Quest-ce que The happy man

cest?
En francais:

Lhomme content
The happy man eats fries.

Lhomme content mange des frites.

Les Adjectifs cont.
In French, unlike English, adjectives must agree with the noun it is modifying in
gender, number, case, (and political opinions).

Elles sont blondes et petites.

Les tableaux sont laids.

Lexamen est long.

In other words,

Redundant, grammatical marking.

Souvenez! (Remember!)

Notice, adjectives agree in gender (masculine or

feminine) and number (singular or plural) with the
noun they are modifying. In general, add -e to make
an adjective feminine. If an adjective already ends in
an unaccented -e, add nothing. In general, to make
an adjective plural, add -s. If an adjective already
ends in an -s, add nothing.
ATTENTION!
When adjectives in a sentences do not follow a form of etre (to
be), they are most often to be found after the noun

La pomme rouge.

The red apple

Jai des yeux marron.

I have brown eyes.

Lhomme content marie une femme italienne.

The happy man marries an italian woman.

Cependant! (However)
In French, just like English, there are many exceptions to rules.

When it comes to adjectival position (where an adjective goes in a sentence),

sometimes the adjective goes before the noun it modifies.

Jaime bien les grandes familles.

I like large families.

Il est une grosse personne.

He is a fat person.
Ah non! Cest
It may look a little scary, but thankfully there
is a way to remember what types of
adjectives go in front of nouns. Let me
trop difficile! (Oh introduce you all to my good friend BAGS

no its too hard!) Beauty: (beau, joli)

Age: (jeune, vieux)

Goodness: (bon, mauvais)

Size: (grand, petit)

Note Also, that these endings are

irregular, but dont freak out! They follow
a pattern!
Encore un chose. . . (one More thing)

The plural indefinite article des changes to de when the

adjective comes before the noun.
Ouf! Bon Travail!
