Bell Ringer

1. Identify the following as examples of conduction, convection,

or radiation.
1. Hot coffee is stirred with a spoon, the spoon gets hot
due to _______________.
2. A huge rock at the state park gets so hot during the
day that you cant sit on it from _______________.
3. Warm air over the beach rises while cooler dense air
from the ocean rushes in due to _______________.
THERMODYNAMICS

Its the study of heat and how it

is transferred!
Heat IS energy
(molecules moving very
quickly)
Heat flows from warmer to cooler
objects. Always.
How is Heat Transferred?
There are THREE ways heat can move.

Conduction

Convection

Radiation
CONDUCTION

Heat is transferred from one particle of matter

to another in an object without the movement
of the object.

Conduction = CONTACT
EXAMPLE OF CONDUCTION
A piece of cheese melts as heat is transferred from the meat to
the cheese (Contact)
CONVECTION
Convection is the movement that transfers heat within fluids
and air (gas)
Heat is transferred by currents within the fluid or gas
Convection = VENTS (through air and liquid particles)

Convection moves in
a circular pattern
Examples of Convection
RADIATION
Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic
waves
Radiation does NOT require matter to transfer thermal
energy
Radiation = Radiates
(heat escaping the sun)
Radiation From Other Sources
Examples of RADIATION
TEMPERATURE
The average kinetic energy among atoms or
molecules.
Converting temps

Boiling point of water is 212oF or 100oC

Freezing point of water is 32oF or 0oC
Practice Problem 1
Convert 59oF to Celsius.
Practice Problem 2
Convert 59oC to Fahrenheit.
(So, K = C + 273)
Practice Problem 3
Convert 59oC to Kelvin.
Kelvin
Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin.
Absolute zero can only be reached when there is
no energy left in the substance.
oC = (oF-32)x5/9 K = oC + 273

F C K
oF = (oCx9/5)+32 oC = K -273
Practice Problem 4
Convert 41oF to Kelvin.
Practice Problems
1. Convert 32oF to Celcius.
2. What is 289 K in Celsius?
3. 71oC = _____________ oF
4. 68 oF = ____________ oC
5. 32oC is equal to what in Fahrenheit?
6. 400K = __________ oF
7. 15 oF is equal to _____________ K.
