WHAT IS COVALENT
BOND?
A chemical bond formed by sharing a pair of
electrons is called a covalent bond

Covalent bond usually formed between non-

metals.

In many molecules atoms attain complete

octets by sharing one or more than one pair
of electrons between them.
TYPES OF COVALENT
BOND

There are 3 types of covalent

bond:

a) Single bond
b) Double bond
c) Triple bond
SINGLE BOND

SINGLE BOND

Example : molecule of water

formed when one pair of electron is shared

between two atoms.
These two valence electrons forming the bond
are shared by both atoms, resulting in a
SINGLE COVALENT BOND
Another example :

CH4 NH3

Covalent

DOUBLE BOND

DOUBLE DOND
Example :molecule of oxygen

formed when three pairs of electrons are

shared between two atoms.
These two oxygen atoms share two pairs of
valence electrons (four valence electrons total)
between them, forming a DOUBLE COVALENT
BOND
Another example :

CO2

TRIPLE BOND

TRIPLE BOND
Example: Molecule of Nitrogen

Formed when two pairs of electrons are

shared between two atoms.
The two nitrogen atoms in a molecule of nitrogen
share three pairs of valence electrons (six
valence electrons total) to form a TRIPLE
COVALENT BOND.
ELECTRON
ARRANGEMENT FOR
SINGLE BOND
Example:1 H2

H + H H H

The shared a pair of electrons provides each hydrogen atom with

two electrons in its valence shell (the 1s) orbital.
Example: Cl2

Cl + Cl Cl Cl

Each chlorine atom shared a pair of electron and achieves the electron
configuration of the noble gas argon
Example: F2

F + F F F

Each fluorine atom shared a pair of electron and achieves the

electron configuration of the noble gas argon
Example: CF4

Four chlorine atom shared four pair of electrons with carbon atom to
achieves the electron configuration of the noble gas argon
ELECTRON
ARRANGEMENT FOR
DOUBLE BOND
Example: 6O2

O + O O O

Each oxygen atom shared two pairs of electrons and achieves the
electron configuration of the noble gas argon
Example: CO2

2 O + C O C O

Two oxygen atoms shared two pair of electrons with carbon atom
to achieves the electron configuration of the noble gas argon
ELECTRON
ARRANGEMENT FOR
TRIPLE BOND
Example:N2

N + N N N

Because each nitrogen contains 5 valence electrons, they need to

share 3 pairs to each achieve a valence octet
