SPIRITUALITAS

Jehosua S.V. Sinolungan / Taufiq Pasiak

What is spirituality?
Some stress relief tools are very tangible: exercising more, eating
healthy foods and talking with friends.
A less tangible but no less useful way to find stress relief is
through spirituality.

What is spirituality?
Spirituality has many definitions, but at its core spirituality helps to
give our lives context. It's not necessarily connected to a specific
belief system or even religious worship. Instead, it arises from your
connection with yourself and with others, the development of your
personal value system, and your search for meaning in life.
For many, spirituality takes the form of religious observance, prayer,
meditation or a belief in a higher power.

For others, it can be found in nature, music, art or a secular

community. Spirituality is different for everyone.

Tripartite or Bipartite
One way to view our nature is that we have a material part, our body, and
an immaterial part, our soul and/or spirit.
A frequently held view is that we have a bipartite nature where the soul
and spirit are taken as different terms for the same entity.
In a 1931 issue of The Evangelical Quarterly, A. McCaig wrote a
comprehensive 17-page review of scripture in an article titled Thoughts
on the Tripartite Theory of Human Nature in which the author makes the
case that we are bipartite.
Many other theologians suggest that our immaterial nature has two
distinctly different parts a soul and a spirit. This is known as a tripartite
view. Information to include scripture references are at this website and
the site of Andrew Wommack Ministries.
We tend to lean towards those who hold a tripartite view and the
following is my understanding of our design and how the body, soul and
spirit are interconnected. Indeed, we are very, very complex beings and
only a living God could have created us as we are. I urge you to study the
scriptures to arrive at your own understanding of mans design.

Our Body
It is by our body that we function. Its comprised of
organs and cells which consists of protein
carbohydrates and fats. Our body contains our nervous
system with nerves and the brain. Its through our
bodies that we connect to the physical world with our
five senses.
Contoh Pandangan Kristen :

God made our bodies to function as they do.

Our Soul
Our soul is what gives us our personality and its through our soul that we
live out our relationship with God, with other people and with our self.
Our soul likely has three major components our mind, will and emotions.
Our mind has a conscious part and a subconscious part. The conscious mind
is where we do our thinking and reasoning. The sub-conscious mind is
where we hold our deep beliefs and our attitudes. Its also where we have
our feeling, our emotions and retain our memories. Our will is what gives us
the ability to make choices.
Through a very complex way, our mind, our will and our emotions are
connected to the body through our endocrine, nervous and immune
systems.
The mind and body communicate constantly. What the mind thinks,
perceives, and experiences is sent from our brain to the rest of the body.

Our Spirit
Its in our spirit that we have meaning and purpose in life. At the deepest level our
spirit gives us meaning and purpose and our spirit enables us to love one another,
our self and God. Its through our spirit that we have communion and fellowship
with God.
Our spirit gives us intuition between right and wrong. For in-depth reading about
the distinction between spirit, soul and body consider material written by
Watchman Nee, especially The Spiritual Man which is a book online and free.
Our spiritual health will have a significant impact on our emotional health which
will have a major influence on our physical health.
The inter-connection between the spirit, the soul and the body is certainly a
complex connection, nevertheless, the connection is very real.

Contoh Pandangan Kristen :

The apostle John was inspired by God to write in 3 John 1:2,
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul
prospers.

This is an indication of the importance of attending to matters of the soul as it relates

to being healthy.

Stress, Health and Faith
Life and stress they go hand in hand. We will experience lots and lots of
stress in our life. There is no getting around it. I believe that the degree to
which we effectively manage and cope with the stress in our lives will
determine the degree to which we are healthy. If we turn to unhealthy
behaviors to cope with the stress, our physical and emotional health will
suffer.
Many people turn to food as a way to cope with stress. Others turn to the
use of drugs. Some turn to alcohol. Still others light up a cigarette. Some
burn the midnight oil surfing the internet and pay for it the next day
because they have had inadequate sleep.
Faith can be the anchor that keeps a person steady in times of stress. If
followed, biblical principles can be the cornerstone of a persons life and
enable them to live a life less impacted by what otherwise would be
stressful circumstances. Read more about Spiritual Exercises.

Life, Stress and Health Model
We view potential stressors of life and react to
events in life through lenses. The diagram
below demonstrates how aspects of ones life can
impact on their beliefs and attitudes, which can
have a corresponding impact on their choices and
resulting lifestyle habits. Our repeated behaviors
will become our habits and its ones habits that
determine how they respond to potential
stressors. This, in turn will hugely impact on ones
health and quality of life.

Stress and Health A Christian Faith Perspective
Our faith can be an invaluable resource to help us manage
the stressors of life. Most believers, however, do not fully
apply key principles of the Christian faith to their life as it
regards to stress management.
The model above does not include several key components,
or factors, that are important from a Christian faith
perspective. Learning who God is, and the knowledge we
gain about Gods truths, through reading the Bible, will
influence our beliefs and attitudes, which will shape our
behavior. The faith dimension of managing the stressors of
life, and 40 related biblical principles, are addressed in
detail in the Faith and Health Ambassador Course, our
PathWay 2 Wholeness program and our workshop,
Understanding the Faith and Health Link.

The Interaction Between Spirit, Soul and Body
Many of us are affected by how we handle the stress that life brings us. If
chronic stress is left unchecked, over a period of time our bodies will take
a toll. A strong faith can help us to cope with the stress that we experience
in our life and enable the impact of that stress to be less significant.
Without a strong personal faith we must resort to our own resources to
cope with the stress present in our life. Often we attempt to cope with this
stress through addictions and other methods of escape.
This behavior can further exacerbate the effect of stress on our physical
health. A strong personal faith can be a resource that helps to manage
stress.
Read more at Stress, Health and Faith.
Our beliefs and attitudes, determined in large degree by our faith, will play
a major role in our thinking patterns. Our day to day thinking will have an
impact on our emotions and feelings, and our emotions and feelings will
have a major impact on our behaviors. In this regard, our thought patterns
play a significant role in our emotional and physical health. In the page on
Spiritual Exercises we address the importance of our thinking patterns and
how we can change our thinking which can transform our life.
Caring for our heart our spiritual heart as well as our physical heart is

Discovering your spirituality
Uncovering your spirituality may take some self-discovery. Here are
some questions to ask yourself to discover what experiences and
values define you:
What are your important relationships?
What do you value most in your life?
What people give you a sense of community?
What inspires you and gives you hope?
What brings you joy?
What are your proudest achievements?
The answers to such questions help you identify the most
important people and experiences in your life. With this
information, you can focus your search for spirituality on the
relationships and activities in life that have helped define you as a
person and those that continue to inspire your personal growth.

Cultivating your spirituality
Spirituality also involves getting in touch with your inner self. A key
component is self-reflection. Try these tips:
Try prayer, meditation and relaxation techniques to help focus your
thoughts and find peace of mind.
Keep a journal to help you express your feelings and record your
progress.
Seek out a trusted adviser or friend who can help you discover
what's important to you in life. Others may have insights that you
haven't yet discovered.
Read inspirational stories or essays to help you evaluate different
philosophies of life.
Talk to others whose spiritual lives you admire. Ask questions to
learn how they found their way to a fulfilling spiritual life.

Nurturing your relationships
Spirituality is also nurtured by your relationships
with others. Realizing this, it's essential to foster
relationships with the people who are important
to you. This can lead to a deepened sense of your
place in life and in the greater good.
Make relationships with friends and family a
priority. Give more than you receive.
See the good in people and in yourself. Accept
others as they are, without judgment.
Contribute to your community by volunteering.

Staying connected to your inner spirit and the
lives of those around you can enhance your
quality of life, both mentally and physically.
Your personal concept of spirituality may
change with your age and life experiences, but
it always forms the basis of your well-being,
helps you cope with stressors large and small,
and affirms your purpose in life.
