Definition :
Antagonisms have been defined as specific
interactions in which the requirement for one
essential amino acid, not necessarily the first
limiting amino acid, is increased by the addition of
a structurally related amino acid to the diet
(Harper 1956; Harper et al. 1970).
Example:
1. lysine - arginine antagonism
2. valine - leucine- isoleucine antagonism
3. threonine tryptophan antagonism
4. methionine, glycine and arginine antagonism
Antagonisms can occur between amino acids
having side chains exhibiting similar structural
and/or chemical characteristics, and increasing the
dietary concentration of one that is in excess of
productive use adversely affects metabolism of the
other.
