CASE OVERVIEW
STUDENT INFORMATION:
AGE: 17
RACE: NATIVE AMERICAN
SCHOOL STATUS: SOPHOMORE
ASSESSMENT TYPE: STUDENT PREGNANCY ASSESSMENT
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY WITH A SLIGHT MOTIVATIONAL
INTERVIEWING INTERVENTION

Competency 1. Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and
regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as
appropriate to context.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION

FIRST MET THIS STUDENT IN AUGUST, SHE WAS VERY OPEN ABOUT TRYING TO GET PREGNANT
AND WAS CARRYING TWO POSITIVE PREGNANCY TESTS IN HER BRA.
AFTER RECEIVING MEDICAL PROOF OF HER PREGNANCY FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE, SHE WAS
ALLOWED A BATHROOM PASS TO USE DURING THE SCHOOL WEEK.
MY SUPERVISOR SUGGESTS DOING AN ASSESSMENT ON THIS PARTICULAR STUDENT BECAUSE
SHE FELT THE STUDENT WOULD REVEAL DETAILS SURROUNDING HER PREGNANCY EASILY
WHICH WOULD BE GOOD PRACTICE.

Competency 1. Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in
practice situations.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

THE STUDENT IS CURRENTLY BEHIND ACADEMICALLY AND IS NOW PREGNANT. THIS

ASSESSMENT IS TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS STUDENTS SCHOOL
LIFE AND HOME LIFE. WHILE ALSO SETTING FUTURE GOALS FOR GRADUATION AND
PREPARING FOR CHILD BIRTH.

Competency 6: Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage diverse clients and
constituencies.
SERVICES

BY USING THE SOCIAL LEARNING FRAMEWORK, IT ALLOWED THE STUDENT TO THINK ABOUT
HER ACTIONS AND HOW THEY MAY MIRROR HER FAMILIES ACTIONS. ALSO CULTURAL NORMS
PLAY A ROLE SINCE TEEN PREGNANCY SEEMS TO OUTSHINE ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN SOME
RURAL NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILIES.
TOWARDS THE END OF THE ASSESSMENT, WITH PERMISSION I GAVE SOME INFORMATION
ABOUT LOCAL RESOURCES TO HELP WITH HER PREGNANCY SUCH AS HEALTHY START. ALSO
EXPRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING NUTRITIOUS FOODS WHILE PREGNANT.

Competency 2: Present themselves as learners and engage clients and constituencies as experts of their own
experiences.
STUDENT ASSESSMENT PROS VS. CONS

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STUDENTS FAMILY IS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF HER STUDENT OFTEN IS NOT WHERE SHE IS
PREGNANCY.
SUPPOSED TO BE
STUDENT IS STILL AT PSHS EVEN THOUGH SHE IS 17
AND CAN DROP OUT STUDENT IS BEHIND ACADEMICALLY
SAYS SHE AND HER BOYFRIEND ARE LOOKING FOR
JOBS
STUDENT IS OFTEN DISTRACTED BY HER
MALE PEERS.
STUDENT HAS A DESIRE TO GRADUATE AND
BECOME A VETERINARIAN

Competency 6: Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and
other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients and constituencies.
ASSESSMENT GOALS

STUDENT'S GOAL IS TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL, FIND A JOB AND HAVE A HEALTHY BABY.
MY RECOMMENDATION TO STUDENT: USE YOUR SCHOOL RESOURCES TO HELP INCREASE
YOUR GRADES. EX. LEARNING CENTER TUES & THURS AFTER SCHOOL WITH TRANSPORTATION!
STUDENT WAS SUPPOSED TO MEET WITH MY SUPERVISOR AND MYSELF AGAIN ON 10-16-17
TO REVIEW GOALS AND SET TIMEFRAMES BUT THE STUDENT WANDERS OFTEN AND COULD
NOT BE FOUND.

Competency 7: Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals and objectives based on the critical
assessment of strengths, needs, and challenges within clients and constituencies.
1. What are some biases you had going into the interview?
At first I found it very disturbing to see a young teen trying to get pregnant like having children is a game.
However I spoke to my supervisor so that I can better understand the cultural and local norms that these teens live
in.
2. What were some value differences between you and the client? I dont believe the student knows the value of
education yet, so we definitely have a different view in that area. However, we both value family.
3. What events or life experiences have shaped them into the person they are? Direct family members do not
value school or graduating therefore the students doesnt either. Many of the students family members had babies
while in high school.
4. What is the staff recommendation about diagnosis, Interventions or treatment?
Staff also recommends using the learning center to make up missed work and also emphasizes on keeping doctor
appointments.
5. What does research say on their diagnosis/problem/treatment? Social learning theory suggests that human
behavior is learned as individuals interact with their environment. Also, problem behavior is maintained by
positive or negative reinforcement.
6. What changes do recommend for the agency or service ? It feels like the issue of teen pregnancy will
continue at this agency due to 1. improper sex education 2. Lack of affordable activities for teens and 3. the
widespread misuse of substances in the community.
Competency 2: Apply self-awareness and self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and
values in working with diverse clients and constituencies.
