PROBLEM 9

INSTRUMENTATION

PROBLEM 9
INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL VALVES
You have sized all lines. At this point you normally would also have a plot plan so
you could estimate line lengths and pressure drops. Since we have not talked
about plot plans yet, assume the given equivalent line lengths are satisfactory.

You are now ready to locate and size the control valves and specify the pumps.

A. Plan the control scheme. Show all control valves and

controllers on the flow diagram. (Although you shall soon be
an ExxonMobil CETC graduate, you should still consult with
your friendly and knowledgeable instrument lecturer.)

B. Confirm the assumed allowable pressure drop on the valve

used in Problem 8.

C. Determine the size of the control valve in the tower feed line
and select a suitable valve. First carry out a hand calculation
and then verify your answer in PEGASYS.

A. CONTROL SCHEME

To maintain the desired recovery of C5's in the overhead as the feed

composition changes, we will control the tower to hold the pressure and
temperature constant. This should fix the tray compositions and thus the
overhead and bottoms composition.

Tower Temperature Control

A tray-to-tray calculation with a different feed composition was made.

Comparison of the temperature profile with that of the design case indicated
the greatest change of temperature was at Tray 8, so this tray is selected as
the control tray.

Tower Pressure Control

Experience has shown that throttling cooling water leads to rapid fouling of the
condenser tubes. So the "hot gas by-pass" control scheme is selected.
