1
PERMEABILITY
What is permeability ??

Permeability is defined as the property that

governs the rate of flow of a fluid into a porous
solid. Permeability is also can be defined ability to
resist weathering action, chemical attack, abrasion,
or any process of deterioration.

2 scenarios
i. Air pockets Due to incomplete compaction
ii. Empty space Due to loss of mixing water

2
IMPERMEABILITY
Impermeability of concrete is an ability of concrete to
resist pressurized water penetration.

Penetration of aggressive liquids into the concrete has

considerable effect on its durability.

Concrete permeability determines the intensity of such

penetration, as well as its frost resistance.

In ferroconcretes penetration of moisture and air

causes corrosion of steel reinforcement, resulting in
volume gain, cracking and peeling of the protective
concrete layer.
3
IMPERMEABLE CONCRETE
Aconcretemass consists of well graded
aggregate having compacted well and of
which segregation,bleedingand any sources
of air voids are avoided successfully, is
impermeable.

4
PROPERTIES
Low permeability concrete is a material with a
very low porosity, thus reducing the flow of
water through it.

Its low permeability helps the water-proofing systems.

Allows for the recovery of rain water.
Reduces the flow of humidity
Substitutes for water proofing of walls and foundations.
Reduction of bleeding.
Lower permeability over normal concrete.
Maximum aggregate size: from 10 to 20 mm.

5
PREPARTION OF IMPERMEABLE
CONCRETE
By reducing water - cement ratio:

The mixing water is indirectly responsible for permeability of

the hydrated cement paste because its content determines first
the total space and subsequently the unfilled space after the
water is consumed by either cement hydration reactions or
evaporation to the environment.

Concrete will not be vulnerable to water-related destructive

phenomena if there is a little or no evaporable water left after
drying and provided that the subsequent exposure of the
concrete to the environment did not cause to re-saturation of
the pores.

6
7
By proper curing:

Moist curing for 7 days resulted in a much more impermeable

concrete.

8
By the use of admixture

Such as silica flume, latex emulsion, and high range water reducer
allows placement of highly impermeable concrete.

Some Compound are-

I. Talc, chalk, are used successfully in concrete industry to fill/eliminate
the unexpected voids in concrete which makes concrete permeable.

II. Some compounds applied in concrete like aluminum sulfate, calcium

chlorides, alkaline silicates etc, chemically reacts with concrete and
produce a water proof mass of concrete.

III. Many prepared water proofing compounds are now available in the
market. The most common compounds are Impermo, Pudlo, Permo
etc.

9
By using finer cement

Finer cement particles will hydrate much faster, thus creating

the impermeable concrete faster.

10
FACTORS CONTROLLING
IMPERMIABILITY OF CONCRETE

11
ADVANTAGES

I. Durability of concrete increases.

II. Impermeability of concrete improves concretes resistance to re-

saturation , sulphate and other chemical attack, and chloride ion
penetration.

III. Penetration of moisture and air causes corrosion of steel

reinforcement, resulting in volume gain, cracking and peeling of
the protective concrete layer which is prevented in impermeable
concrete.

IV. Normal concrete can not be used on places likely to be subjected

by high degree of moisture , humidity ,rain or in contact with soil
where impermeable concrete is highly effective.

12
PLACES WHERE IMPERMEABLE
CONCRETE CAN BE USED
I. Cistern
II. Water Canals
III. Tunnels
IV. Retaining wall
V. Dam

There is need for watertight concrete in

foundations, floor slabs and other applications
Where ground water may be encountered.

13
SCOPE IN INDIA
INDIA is a peninsular country.

3 side surrounded by sea water.

Structures are build in costal areas.

Steel and other ferrous metal along the coastline are

susceptible to corrosion, which is mainly initiated by
chloride ions present in the sea salts.

High concentration of salt and moisture result in

accelerated corrosion of reinforcing steel thereby
significantly deteriorating the concrete structure.

14
INDIA is also a developing country.

Lots of Dams and Tunnel construction are undergoing

everyday.

INDIA needs world class roads which can survive in

adverse climatic conditions.

Construction of high rise and aesthetically appealing

buildings in areas of Jammu and Kashmir, which is
covered with snow and frost action is a common thing.

15
Lookingback on all the advantages of using
impermeable concrete can prove to be a very
valuable and helpful ally in modern day
construction in INDIA.

Hence, it has great scope in construction in

INDIA.
