Introduction

According to the W.H.O perspective, circumcision is the surgical

removal of the end penile prepuce (foreskin).

Circumcision was originally a hygienic ritual association with the

Jewish religion and performed on male infants. This practice
achieved widespread popularity in the United States and was
performed almost routinely on male new born for decades.

The benefits of male circumcision have become more and more

clear over the last ten years,' said Dr Aaron Tobian, a Johns
Hopkins University researcher involved in one of the African
studies.
Critics of circumcision argue that it has disadvantages, such as:
reduced sensitivity - an uncircumcised penis is more sensitive than
a circumcised penis, meaning that circumcised men may
experience less pleasure during sex
Potential complications of circumcision - such as excessive
bleeding and post-operative infection - outweigh any potential
benefits.

Circumcision is considered a minimal invasive surgical procedure

which usually takes less than half an hour to perform. Circumcision
can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

there are certain complications which may occur during or after a

circumcision procedure. These may include excessive bleeding,
pain, bruising, wound healing problems and post-operative
infection.
Statement of the Problem

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the end of the prepuce of

the penis which is usually perform at the request of the parents.
Circumcision usually brings about trauma in the community and
the world at large where many post circumcised children suffer
from certain complications like scarring and infection causing a
debilitating effect on children.
Post circumcised complications are higher in the white children to
about 18% and Southern America 14%, then for Eastern Africa
12% and black s 11% and in Cameroon 30% Draincl, 2009)
Research Questions
What knowledge do nurses have in the prevention of post
circumcision complication in the BRH?
What aseptic techniques do nurses use during circumcision?

General Objectives
To assess nurses knowledge on the prevention of post
circumcision complication.

Specific Objectives
To assess nurses knowledge on the prevention of post
circumcision complication.
To assess the use of aseptic techniques during circumcision.
Rationale
The purpose of this study is to know if nurses have adequate
knowledge on the prevention of post circumcision
complications.
study area.
The Buea Regional hospital (BRH) which is situated in the South West
region of Cameroon was successfully inaugurated on October 8, 2004
by H.E Paul Biya, president of the Republic of Cameroon.

Research Design
The research was a case study carried out using observation cross-
sectional study. This design was chosen because the study involves
gathering information on the nursing care for a particular event
(prevention of post circumcision complication).
Study population
Inclusion criteria: consisted of all the nurses on duty in the BRH.
Exclusion criteria: includes retired nurses, nurses not on duty and
parents

Sample size:
A sample size of 40 nurses was gotten from the targeted population
of 80 participants.
Data collection
A structured questionnaire was designed by the investigator base
on the objectives of the study and existing literature. This was
made up of open and closed ended questions. Each
questionnaire had an introduction on how to answer the
questions.

Administrative Permission and Informed Consent

A letter of authorization was presented to the director from the
school before collection of data started. Nurses concerned were
sought upon self-introduction and the presentation of students
identity cards.
Validity of instrument

Content validity.
The questionnaires were reviewed by the supervisor in order to
ensure that the content of the questionnaire was suitable in
relation to the study.

Response rate
The researcher anticipated a sample size of 40 nurses, and though
the researcher encountered much difficulty getting the nurses to
completely participate in the anticipated number, the researcher
waited several shifts and had all the 40 nurses who effectively
completed and handed over the questionnaires; giving a
response rate of 100%.
Ethical Consideration
1. Ethical issues are important to protect both investigators and the
subject included in the study.
2. Informed consent
3. Respecting the rights of participants and right to autonomy.
Right to confidentiality
Freedom from harm

DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

DISCUSSION
From this study it is confirmed that majority of nurse 95% have
adequate knowledge on the prevention of post circumcision
complication and just minority (5%) have inadequate knowledge.

The study also shows according to the nurses use of aseptic

techniques on prevention of complications that all the 40 (100%)
nurses are aware that gloving, hand washing and sterilization of
equipment are the appropriate methods implemented during a
circumcision procedure in order to avoid asepsis none, 0(%) of the
nurses indicated that the frequently changing of dressings and
soiled linen is an appropriate method used to prevent asepsis
because this is done by the nursing mother at home and not in
the hospital setting.
CONCLUSION
Most of the results show that post management will lead to
reduction in incidence for uncircumcised men as well as those
circumcised, even the most effective intervention is unlikely to
complete the spread of venereal diseases and other
complications that follow after prolong management of
circumcision.

RECOMMENDATIONS
All training schools for nurses should include elaborate study plan on
the management in their curriculum of all categories.
In service training and refresher courses should frequently be
organize to keep nurse knowledge up to date.
Hospital mostly should endeavor to provide all adequate equipment
that can be used by nurses in order to provide proper care for the
circumcised children.
