CONTRIBUTION
A CONTRIBUTION TO A LONGER PIECE is written for someone who is in the process
of collecting information for use in a larger document (e.g. a book, a guidebook, an
article or a piece of research).
Who is the audience? The audience will be readers who are interested in the
given material.
What is the purpose of the writing? You need to supply information and give your
opinion. The priorities will shift depending on the piece that you are contributing
to: a guidebook will be focused on information, while other books will be more
focused on opinions and explanations.
Is it formal? Again, this depends on the piece you are contributing to.
Should I use headings or bullet points? You can use headings if you like, but not
bullet points.
How should it start? You can use a simple and descriptive title. The opening
paragraph should be informative but also interesting, you want to motivate your
reader to continue. Use a vivid description of something to capture their interest.
How should it finish? You want to have a memorable closing sentence.
CAE WRITING PAPER
In Paper 2 (Writing) there will be an element of persuasive
writing. You will be trying to persuade:
1. readers of the college magazine of the importance of the
issue of climate change.
