Tacit knowledge: That type of knowledge which people


carry in their mind, and is, therefore, difficult to access.

Explicit knowledge: That type of knowledge which has


been or can be articulated, codified, and stored in certain
media.

KM emerged in the early 90s of the last century as a pure ICT approach.
Knowledge was perceived to be written or digitize content. Answers to
managing knowledge were sought in ICT tools such as databases,
(online) libraries etc.
e.g. wikis, blogs, social media, discussion forums, etc.

In the late 90s, the focus of KM shifted towards the personal side of
knowledge.

This was partially due to the realization that knowledge would not let
itself be contained into ICT systems, but is rather personal and
subjective: knowledge is in people.

The overall objective of KM in this approach is to help individuals

1. Ethics studies human conduct and evaluates these as moral or
immoral and right or wrong and good or bad.

2. Ethics sets moral standards and norms for human behaviour.

3. Ethics evaluates past behaviour against standards and norms and,


then, makes judgment upon human behaviors as right or wrong
and moral or immoral. F

explicit knowledge, a significant portion of core and enabling knowledge
remain tacit.

The willingness to share this tacit knowledge is


influenced to a large extent by the managerial approaches to identify,
capture and integrate that knowledge.
