Steps to Create an Variant Configuration

Sequence for activating integration model
Detailed scheduling using characteristics
VC OVERVIEW

Variant configuration is for manufacturing complex products

The customer determines the features of the product. A customer buying a car, for example, can choose
the features of the car and combine these features as required

React quickly to customers' requirements

The product configurator improves information exchange between sales, engineering, and production

configuration helps the customer or salesperson to put together specifications for the product and ensure
that the product can be produced from these specifications
CDP OVERVIEW

CDP is used to plan in-house production for products using characteristics

The products are configurable in the ERP system

CDP supports both make-to-order production and make-to-stock production

The system includes the configuration when planning and consume requirements with the matching
receipts (production orders, purchase orders, purchase requisitions, batch stock)

The classes and characteristics must exist in SAP APO

Classes and Characteristics are transferred from the ERP system to SAP APO, in order to ensure
that this data is consistent in both the ERP and SAP APO system

Production data structures (PDS) or product process model plans (PPMs) act as the source of supply
for in-house production
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VC AND CDP SCHEMA

The VC-configuration schema allows a configuration only for sales orders, and the CDP
configuration schema allows a configuration for other objects like forecast, planned orders,
production orders and batches

CDP supports both make-to-order production and make-to-stock production while using VC
the sales order has a configuration, the make to-order strategy is mandatory to keep the link
between the sales order and the receipts during planning

The CDP-configuration schema allows demands (sales orders, dependent demands) to define
requirements for the characteristic values of their supplies. The characteristics values are
considered in pegging (demand with receipts)
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VC AND CDP

For the VC-configuration relevance the configuration of the planned order exists only as a
reference to the configuration of the sales order, whereas a planned order with CDP-
configuration relevance contains its own configuration without reference to the sales order

Planned order contains CDP-configuration relevance the planned order is automatically

converted into a production order when transferred to R/3
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VC AND CDP

Planning with the CDP-configuration schema is based on the APO-class type 400, a R/3-class
with type 300 is transferred as a class of the type 300 and additionally (if the CDP-
configuration schema is active) as a class with type 400

Example CDP: Incoming sales order from the R/3 system for the product Pipe that has the
value red for the characteristic colour and the value 100 for the characteristic Length. In SAP
APO, a production order for this material with the same valuation is created

TERMINOLOGIES USED

KMAT Material / Configurable material : Usually KMAT material type is used to create
configurable materials. But it is not mandatory to use the KMAT material type. A custom
material type can be used for configurable materials

Material Variant : A material variant is a material that can be kept in stock and that arises
from an individual configuration of a configurable product.
STEPS FOR CREATING VARIANT CONFIGURATION

Creation of characteristics and defining its values (CT04)

Creation of classes using characteristics (CL02)
Creation of KMAT Material (MM01)
Assigning classes to KMAT Material (MM01)
Defining Super BOM for KMAT Material (CS01)
Defining dependencies for components of super BOM (CS01)
Creation of material variant (MM01)
Assigning classes to material variant (MM01)
Assigning KMAT to material variant and select configuration of FERT (MM01)
Create configuration profile (CU41)
SEQUENCE OF ACTIVATING INTEGRATION MODEL

Generate and activate integration model for plant

Generate and activate integration model for class and characteristics

Generate and activate integration model for Configurable material e.g. Z_SHEET_MATNR

Generate and activate integration model for Material variant

DETAILED SCHEDULING USING CHARACTERISTICS

Scheduling considers the characteristics so that scheduling can create results that are feasible in
terms of matching configurations

The customer order assignment is considered i.e. it is not possible to assign receipts to
requirements of different customer order segments

CDP-configuration relevance in a make-to-stock environment the pegging assignment between receipts

and requirements might change if new demands or supplies are created or re-scheduled variant

The planning strategies within the scheduling heuristics control whether pegging and the dependencies
between receipts and requirements are considered

The optimiser does consider customer order assignments and the CDP configuration like the pegging does
independent of an existing pegging
