CEHNNAI
ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I thanks the DOMS, University of Madras giving me

chance to learn the subject Entrepreneurship.
“Whatever you can do or dream you
can…….begin it. Boldness has genius,
power & magic in it”

-JohannVon Goethe
German Philosopher
The Nepal you may not know!
 71% or 20 million (approx) people are below 35 years
of age. Nepalese are young.
 Growth Rate is 2.17%.
 94% drop out rate of children between kinder garden
and 10+2.
 6% which is our so called educate youth, go in for a
regular college degree which may not be very relevant
in today’s context for employment generation
73% of all graduate from colleges are Arts
graduates.
While 95% of the world youth between 15 to 35
years of age learn a vocation, a skill or a trade, with
a choice of 3000 vocational education & training
programs, we Nepalese have only identified few
trades so far after 16 years of democracy and hardly
2% of the population goes in for formal VET
training!
 We can get engineers in Nepal but no carpenters, plumbers,
drivers and other skilled personnel as per international
standards! I.T is the only exception.
 According to the world ranking of IT Nepal placed at 124th
position.
 I.T. is only 1.5% of the world GDP. Nepal present share is
about 0.03%.We need to concentrate on the balance 99.97% of
the Economy & Enterprise and make it world class, for rapid
economic growth and employment generation.
 46%unemployed* and only 26% have actually
registered with employment offices with little or
no hope of getting employment (our estimates)*

 Of all new employment generated, 76% are in an

agriculture, 6% are in the industry and balance
18% in the service sector’.
 51% illiterate people, based on the
international definition of the 3R’s (reading
writing and arithmetic, education up to
primary level)

 The Nepali definition of literacy, “If you can

write your name, you are literate”; nobody has
seriously ever challenged this definition.
 24.7% live below the Government of Nepal’s
definition of Poverty Line of Rs.10 per day!
(based on being able to buy enough rice and
wheat from the Public Distribution
System/Ration Shops, which has food value of
2200 k Cal)
 Nobody has ever challenged this definition of
‘Poverty Line’. How can one expect people to live
with a few kilos of raw uncooked wheat or rice?
As human beings don’t we need more? How about
one set of clothes to cover our bodies, one set of
chapels for our feet, some vegetables, milk and
fruit, in our diet? How will we cook without any
energy and fuel?
450 million* live below the poverty line definition
of the World Bank’s old definition of @ US $ 1
per day per person, or US $ 365 per year, 700
million* people below the poverty line definition
of the World Bank’s new definition@ US $ 2 per
day per person or US $ 730 per year(our estimates)*
 Average GDP of a Nepali is about US $ 210 per year
per person(9 million people and a GDP of US $ 12.47
billion).
 Nepal has only 0.05 % of the world GDP and is
0.43% of the world population. Demands are high
but buying power is low. Hence we will need to
increase our export related activities by 10 times as
the foreign markets are 75 times bigger than the
Nepali market. Our share of world markets or
foreign trade is 0.05%, down from past two years.
 Only 0.1% of Nepali understand English, yet
most of the websites of the Government of
Nepal, and Public Institutions are in English!

 While English is a language used in countries

which account for about 40% of the world GDP,
viz, USA+ UK + old British Colonies, yet in
Nepal we talk of Globalization, we are not
serious to learn the other languages of the
world, e.g., Japanese, German etc, unlike the
Chinese youth who are doing otherwise.
 Nepal is probably at the bottom of the heap, as far the
human development index is concerned.
 Democracy is to the people, for the people, by the
people. If we have to succeed the Citizen has to get
involved and participate in Governance.
 We have 7 official languages, unlike other countries,
1000 dialects, all the religions of the world, and
because of low human and economic development
emphasis on SC, ST, Dalits, caste, religion sect, etc.
Under the above circumstances how we
run an efficient country with Good Governance
and Effective Administration and create
Employment Guarantee
ABOUT THE NEPALI YOUTH

Deep in Slumber or helpless?

Who is to blame?
The Parents who want to see their son and
daughters in a financially secure position, the
teachers who are forced to finish the textbook
cover to cover by March, or the youngsters who
feel compelled to tread the conventional path?

“Society cannot point a finger at them,

without taking some of the blame”
HARNESSING YOUTH FOR NATION-BUILDING

What youngsters require is not just guidance but a

mass movement which will beckon them to serve
their motherland and an instilling force of pride
Which will develop in them a sense of responsibility
to preserve their heritage.

“It is essential to ensure that

young people are provided the
avenues to involve themselves in
nation-building activities.”
JOBS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
A Reality Or A Dream
What is the Need of the Hour?
Job Seeker or Job Creator?
ARE YOU GOOD ENOUGH

53% of employed Nepali youth suffer from some

degree of skill deprivation.
57% suffer from some degree of un-employability.
90% of employment opportunities require vocational
skills.
90% of our college/school education is bookish.
WAITING FOR EMPLOYMENT
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
ORIENTATION IS THE ONLY
KEY
TO SOLVING
UNEMPLOYMENT
EDUCATION INTEGRATED WITH
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Employment generation system
was not in a position to absorb the
graduates passing out from the
Universities leading to increase in
educated unemployed, year after
year.“This system will lead to
instability in the social
structure.We need education
integrated with an entrepreneurial
spirit.”
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam
Former President of India
WHAT YOUTH DECIDES AFTER GRADUATION?

Higher Studies in the same

Subject-31%
Study MBA-10%
Work for a Company-33%
Start a business-9%
Join family Business-4%
Get married and settle down-3%
Education system should highlight the
importance of entrepreneurship and prepare the
students right from school and college
education
to get oriented towards setting up enterprises
which will provide them creativity, freedom and
ability to generate wealth.

Apart from entrepreneurship, the youth should

have the “We can do it” spirit
ENTREPRENEURS –TRUE HEROS
Who is a hero?
Is he the solider who lays down his life
But saves hundreds of men and women
from instant Death?
Is he the character actor or angry young
man?
Is he a victor in the election?
Is he a victor in selection for the top in a
big corporate house?
Oh, yes, They are all heroes. Oxford Dictionary,
however, describes a hero as chief male character in
poem, play or story.
But in our opinion, Entrepreneurs are
true heroes.
They set impossible goals, pursue them
with courage, realize them with resolve.
They challenge, they lead and they inspire.
