• 1950s:Imaging applications in

• 1960s:Research on lowering the fiber
loss for telecom. applications.
• 1970s:Development of low loss

• 1980s:single mode fibers (OC-3 to
OC-48) over repeater sapcings of 40

EDFA), WDM (wavelength division
multiplexing) toward dense-WDM.
Operating range of 4 key components in the 3 different
optical windows
To avoid this noise , use LED, Use Laser since it has large number of longitudnal modes
which increases the graininess of speckle pattern by reducing intensity fluctuations.
Use fiber with large NA,Use single mode fiber .

Extinction Ratio Penalty (ER) :
It’s the ratio of optical power level for logic 1 to the power level for logic 0.
Ideally ER should be infinity for zero power penalty, but for reducing risetime of laser
pulses ER should be Finite.
Let P1-ER and P0-ER be 1 & 0 power levels with non zero ER
ER = (P1-ER + P0-ER)/2
= P0-ER * (ER + 1)/2 = P1-ER (ER + 1)/2ER
When receiver thermal noise is more, the incident signal level here is, P0= 0,P1= 2Pavg
PP(ER) = -10log (P1-ER - P0-ER)/P1
= -10log ER-1/ER + 1
